Is the lid visibly open, or does a closed lid still show a lock warning?
Prefer to read it? Quick checklist
  1. Is the lid visibly open, or does a closed lid still show a lock warning?
    • The lid or door is open: The lid or door is open or not latched: A door warning is displayed, the lid is visibly open, or clothing is caught between the door and seal. (likely)
    • It is closed but the lock warning remains: A lid switch or door latch needs service: The lid or door closes but the washer continues to show that it is not secured. (possible)
    • It is closed and no lock warning appears: Is Low/No Spin, Delicate, Hand Wash or another slow-spin cycle selected?
      • Yes: A low or no-spin cycle was selected: The display shows Low/No Spin, Delicate or Hand Wash, which may use a slower spin than a regular cycle. (likely)
      • No: Is the drum packed tightly or holding one bulky item?
        • Yes: The load is too large or bulky for the selected cycle: Bedding or one bulky item is packed tightly, or the drum is above the washer's load guidance. (likely)
        • No: Is foam visible, or does the display show a suds message?
          • Yes: Excess suds interrupted the spin: Foam remains in the tub or the washer displays a suds-related message. (possible)
          • No: Is water still in the tub or is a drain code displayed?
            • Yes: A drain restriction is preventing a full spin: Water remains in the tub, a drain code appears, or the exposed hose or standpipe is restricted. (possible)
            • No: Does the washer rock when gently pressed at opposite corners?
              • Yes: The washer is not level: The washer rocks when gently pressed at opposite corners or the floor is not solid and level. (possible)
              • No: Which description best matches the stopped spin?
                • A balance message appears or the load is uneven: The load is unbalanced: The washer turns gently, adds water, displays a balance message, or leaves one heavy item wet after a retry. (likely)
                • The motor runs but the drum stays still: A drive part needs professional inspection: The motor runs but the drum does not spin, or the washer repeatedly fails after load, drain and leveling checks. (possible)
                • A motor or control code returns, or the washer stays still: A motor or control fault needs service: The drum remains still with a recurring motor or control code after the safe checks. (possible)

If your washer will not spin, start with the cycle, load and lid before assuming a drive part has failed. Many washers slow or retry a spin when a load is unbalanced, too bulky, or set to a gentle cycle. Redistribute the load after the washer stops and check the display; keep the cabinet closed.

If the washer never starts a cycle, use the separate washer won’t-start guide; this page covers a cycle that runs but does not spin.

The five-minute check

First read the display and confirm the selected cycle. Low/No Spin, Delicate and Hand Wash can use slower spin speeds. A cycle intended for bedding may also differ from Normal or Rapid Wash; Whirlpool recommends Bulky or Sheets/Bedding for bulky bedding on some top-load models. The control choice matters because a slow spin can leave more water even when the washer is operating as intended.

Next look at the load. One heavy item can collect water, while too many items can prevent the drum from redistributing the load. If the washer has stopped and the door or lid is unlocked, redistribute the clothes. Do not reach into a moving drum or force a locked door open. If a message says the washer is balancing, give it time to complete its correction attempt.

Check the lid or door. A GE top-load washer will not spin with the lid open. Make sure fabric is not caught at the opening, then close it normally. A lock warning that stays on after the lid or door is shut is a service clue; do not press on or bypass the lock.

If water is still in the tub, check the drain symptom too. A washer may refuse a full spin when water has not pumped out. Inspect only the visible drain hose for a kink and check whether the nearby sink drains normally. The washer not draining guide covers that path in detail. Do not disconnect a hose while the tub is full.

What manufacturers say about spin problems

Whirlpool lists load balance, spin selection, leveling, lid status and power interruption among its checks. A top-load washer may try to correct an uneven load by adding water and turning gently. If that does not work, it can show an error and may need the load redistributed. The front-load guidance also calls out Low/No Spin, Delicate or Hand Wash cycles, HE detergent, overload and hose installation.

GE describes a few clues that are specific to its controls. On models from 2015 onward, SPIN may flash or the display may show “bALAnCINg.” Compact models can show dE or E2 for an open lid; GE says those messages flash for 30 seconds and then clear. Some models pause for three minutes between stages. If the machine pumps water and the motor runs but the tub does not turn, GE says service is needed.

LG recommends checking the amount and distribution of the load, objects caught around the agitator, and whether the machine is level. Its cited test sequence is a Rinse & Spin cycle, then a high spin setting after pausing and restarting the test as described by LG. If the drum still does not turn, LG directs the owner to service. Do not adapt that sequence to another brand.

The brand details are not interchangeable. Whirlpool’s top-load page says that the “Add a Garment” feature can limit the maximum spin speed when the pause happens late in the cycle. It also says a power interruption during spin can affect the result. For bedding on the models covered by that page, use the named bulky-load cycle rather than assuming a regular cycle is suitable. The front-load guide makes a different point: Delicate and Hand Wash cycles can spin more slowly, and the detergent should be HE.

GE’s control observations also depend on the model. On some washers, the OPTIONS knob can sit between settings; GE says to move it to a selected option. After a cancellation indication or two lights at the far right, its support guidance says to choose Drain & Spin and, if that does not resolve it, disconnect power for one minute. GE mentions checking the outlet with a lamp when there is a power concern. That is an external outlet check; it is not permission to open a washer or probe wiring.

LG’s support instructions add a practical distinction for small or unusual loads. A small load may need one or two similar items so the washer can balance it. A top-load washer can attempt to rebalance up to three times. LG says to press the opposite corners to see whether the machine rocks, then adjust the feet so the washer is level. If a zipper, coin or button is caught around the agitator, LG describes using tweezers to remove it. Do not reach near a moving drum, and stop if an object is trapped where the manual does not permit safe access.

Maytag’s source groups the common causes as load size, balance, leveling, a secured lid or door, power interruption, spin speed, suds and pausing the cycle. It recommends HE detergent and checking the machine’s level. That list helps explain why the first checks are broad; it does not identify a particular internal part. A single wet load after a gentle cycle is different from a repeated failure on a normal, balanced load.

Causes, from the easy checks to service

1. The load is unbalanced

The load is unbalanced

The washer turns gently, adds water, displays a balance message, or leaves one heavy item wet after a retry.

An uneven load can make a washer try to correct itself with gentle turns or added water. If it cannot balance, the machine may slow or stop the spin. A single bulky item, a small loose load or laundry gathered on one side can produce this pattern.

After the cycle stops and the door unlocks, distribute the clothes around the drum. If the washer is still correcting itself, wait rather than opening it mid-cycle. LG says a top-load washer can try to rebalance up to three times. If the same message repeats with an ordinary load, record the message and ask service to inspect the washer.

2. The load is too large or bulky for the selected cycle

The load is too large or bulky for the selected cycle

Bedding or one bulky item is packed tightly, or the drum is above the washer's load guidance.

A tightly packed drum can keep the washer from moving the load freely. Whirlpool recommends Bulky or Sheets/Bedding for bedding on some top-load models, not Normal or Rapid Wash. A single comforter or bulky item can also hold water and upset the balance.

Wait for the drum to stop, then remove some items or divide the load if the manual allows it. Do not lift a heavy saturated item if it strains you or the washer opening. Use the cycle recommended for the load rather than increasing the spin speed beyond the model’s options.

3. A low or no-spin cycle was selected

A low or no-spin cycle was selected

The display shows Low/No Spin, Delicate or Hand Wash, which may use a slower spin than a regular cycle.

Check the selected spin speed and cycle name. Whirlpool says Delicate and Hand Wash cycles may spin more slowly; Low or No Spin intentionally limits the final speed. Clothes can feel wetter after those cycles without a drive failure.

Choose a higher spin only if it is appropriate for the fabric and the model’s cycle instructions. If the controls show a high spin and the washer still does not turn, note whether it drains first, whether the load is balanced and whether a code appears. These clues distinguish a setting from a mechanical symptom.

4. The lid or door is open or not latched

The lid or door is open or not latched

A door warning is displayed, the lid is visibly open, or clothing is caught between the door and seal.

A washer will not spin if it does not detect a closed lid or door. Look for clothing at the seal and close the lid normally. GE says no GE top-load washer spins with the lid raised. Whirlpool and Maytag also say the lid or door must be securely closed.

Do not push or pry the latch. If a warning clears after closing the lid, continue with the selected cycle. If the display still says it is open, move to the service guidance below; the latch or switch may need inspection.

5. Excess suds interrupted the spin

Excess suds interrupted the spin

Foam remains in the tub or the washer displays a suds-related message.

Too much detergent can interfere with pumping and spinning. Whirlpool and Maytag recommend HE detergent where the washer calls for it. Sud or Sd can indicate excess foam on some models; the washer may extend rinsing rather than complete a normal spin immediately.

Let the cycle finish its response. If foam remains with the detergent and amount specified in the manual, write down the product and cycle. Do not add a second cleaner to counteract suds or run repeated cycles without checking the instructions.

6. A drain restriction is preventing a full spin

A drain restriction is preventing a full spin

Water remains in the tub, a drain code appears, or the exposed hose or standpipe is restricted.

Water left in the tub can make the spin problem a drain problem too. Check the exposed hose for a kink and the household drain for slow flow. The washer draining checklist explains the limits and safe checks for a front-load filter.

Whirlpool’s spin pages give a standpipe range of 39 to 96 inches and say only 4.5 inches of hose should extend into the standpipe. Its separate drain page gives a 30-inch lower limit. The pages conflict on the minimum height; use the installation instructions for the specific model. Do not tape over the drain opening.

7. The washer is not level

The washer is not level

The washer rocks when gently pressed at opposite corners or the floor is not solid and level.

level

A washer that rocks can have trouble balancing a load. LG recommends checking whether opposite corners move, adjusting the feet on the low side and confirming that all four feet touch a solid, level floor. GE also identifies leveling as part of its spin checks.

Use the manual for the correct foot and lock-nut adjustment. Do not tilt a connected washer alone or place objects under the feet. If the floor flexes or the machine remains unstable after the model’s leveling instructions, ask an installer or technician to assess the setup.

If the lid or door closes but the washer still reports it as open, the latch or switch may need inspection. The manufacturer pages describe the closed-lid requirement, but they do not identify a specific switch test or replacement procedure for this guide.

Do not defeat the lock, remove the lid or test wiring. Fixr lists a washer lid-switch replacement range; ask the technician to confirm the fault and provide a written estimate before approving a part.

iFixit, a secondary repair community, lists a belt, coupling and clutch among possible causes when a washer does not spin. The manufacturer pages used here do not provide owner steps to inspect or replace those parts. A motor that runs while the drum stays still is a reason to stop and arrange service, not to open the cabinet.

Fixr provides separate estimates for several drive parts, but the symptom alone cannot identify which one failed. Have a technician inspect the washer and explain the diagnosis before ordering a belt or clutch. Keep the model number and any unusual sound or code for the service call.

A drum that stays still after the load, setting, lid, drain and leveling checks may have an internal motor or control fault. LG says service is needed if its described spin test does not turn the drum. GE also directs a washer to service when the motor runs but the tub does not spin.

Do not test a capacitor or motor, remove panels or work on wiring. What a safe spin check can tell you

Watch only the normal cycle and display. A balancing message, a low-speed setting, a door warning, a drain code and a completely silent drum point to different next steps. If the washer is still in a cycle, do not reach into the drum. If it has stopped and unlocked, the manual may allow you to redistribute the load or select a drain-and-spin cycle.

When to call and how to compare the cost

Call an appliance technician when a latch warning remains after the door is shut, a motor runs without the tub turning, a code returns, or the washer needs an internal inspection. Stop immediately for a burning smell, damaged wiring or repeated breaker trips. Do not continue to reset a breaker or bypass a lock.

Before the call, write down the model, cycle, spin setting, load type and display message. Note whether the tub drains and whether the washer rocks. Those observations give a technician a better starting point than a guess about a belt or motor.

For the shared drainage path, use the washer not-draining guide. Compare a written estimate with a comparable new washer only after a technician confirms the failed part; do not use the highest range for an unconfirmed component.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my washer leaving clothes soaking wet?

A low-spin setting, bulky or unbalanced load, suds or a drain restriction can leave clothes wet. Check those visible conditions before suspecting a motor or drive part.

Can a washer stop spinning because it is not level?

Yes. GE and LG include leveling among their checks. LG says to test whether the washer rocks diagonally and adjust the feet according to its instructions.

Should I replace the washer belt if the drum does not turn?

No. A belt is only one possible internal cause. iFixit lists several possible drive components, and the manufacturer pages do not provide a belt replacement procedure here.

When should I stop troubleshooting?

Stop if the washer needs an internal inspection, a breaker trips, a capacitor or motor is involved, or the lid lock does not work. Call a qualified technician.
