If your front-load washer smells, start with moisture and residue. Whirlpool and Samsung both recommend cleaning routines, and Samsung says moisture can remain in the rubber door seal. Dry the visible seal and drawer, then use the cleaning cycle named for your model. A sewer-like or burning smell needs a different check.
A short routine after each load
Remove wet clothes promptly. Whirlpool says to leave the door open between loads. Samsung says to dry the tub, detergent drawer and rubber seal after use; the gasket on a front-loader can hold moisture in its folds. Wipe the accessible surfaces with a dry cloth and leave the door ajar so the drum can dry.
Look at the detergent drawer for residue and clean it regularly. Whirlpool recommends cleaning the drawer and using HE detergent for the washer that calls for it. Samsung also lists excess detergent, non-HE detergent and fabric softener among possible sources of odor. Follow the dose and detergent type for your machine rather than adding extra cleaner to mask a smell.
Run the washer’s maintenance cycle on the schedule from its manufacturer. Whirlpool recommends Clean Washer once a month with affresh or liquid chlorine bleach; it excludes thickened, easy-pour and no-splash bleach from this instruction. Samsung recommends Self Clean monthly or every 30 to 40 loads. The product, compartment and sequence differ, so do not transfer one brand’s method to another washer.
If the machine also leaves water in the drum, check the washer not-draining hub. For other spin problems, use the washer not-spinning hub. Find the label first with the appliance model-number guide so the cleaning cycle matches the machine.
Causes of odor, from routine care to service

Wet clothes left in a closed drum can contribute to a musty smell. Whirlpool says to remove laundry promptly and leave the front-load door open between cycles. Samsung also recommends drying the tub after use.
Take clothes out at the end of the cycle. Keep the door ajar when the washer is not in use, if the location allows it. Do not leave the door open where children or pets can access the drum.
2. Detergent residue has built up
Detergent residue has accumulated
The drawer or tub has visible residue, or the wrong detergent or excess detergent was used.

Samsung lists residue, too much detergent, non-HE detergent and fabric softener as possible odor sources. Whirlpool recommends HE detergent for the washer covered by its front-load guidance and says to clean the dispenser regularly.
Clean the removable drawer as the owner’s manual directs. Do not pour several cleaners into the tray or mix products. Use the detergent type and amount specified for your model. If residue is inside an area you cannot remove safely, arrange service.
3. The rubber door gasket stays damp
The front-load door gasket remains damp
Water or residue remains in the folds of the rubber gasket.

The folds of a front-load gasket can retain water. Samsung recommends drying the door seal after use. Check the visible folds for moisture or residue and wipe only the accessible surface.
Do not pull the seal out of its channel. If it is torn or leaking, stop the cycle and ask a technician to inspect it.
4. The pump filter needs cleaning
The pump filter needs cleaning
A front-load washer has an odor and its owner-cleanable pump filter has not been maintained.

Samsung lists a pump filter that has not been cleaned among possible odor causes on front-load washers. Follow the manual’s filter procedure for your model. The filter can release water, so prepare the shallow pan or cloth the instructions specify.
Do not force a stuck filter or reach into the pump. After cleaning, close the filter and its small drain hose securely. If water leaks or the filter will not turn, stop and call service.
5. The drain hose is positioned too far in
The drain hose may be inserted too far
A sewer-like odor occurs and the drain hose position is outside Samsung's stated guidance.

Samsung lists hose placement as a possible cause of a sewer-like smell. Its support page gives two different thresholds: it says the hose should be “no more than eight inches” into the drain and also says “more than 6 inches.” Those statements do not establish one unambiguous depth.
Check the installation instructions for your exact washer and standpipe. Do not push or pull the hose based on one number from the conflicting page. If the smell persists, ask the installer or service technician to inspect the drain setup.

Samsung says a burning smell during the first few cycles can come from the motor coil, but if it persists, the washer needs service. Stop the cycle and do not open the cabinet or test the motor.

Smells that come from what is trapped, not from the drum
Whirlpool’s front-load odor guide lists causes that a routine wipe can miss. Socks, lint or coins caught in the door gasket hold moisture and promote musty odors, so check the gasket folds after every wash. Wet clothes left sitting in the drum develop their own smell and can make the washer smell by association; Whirlpool says to rewash clothes that have become musty and to move loads to the dryer right away. Excess detergent or fabric softener builds up inside the machine and in the dispensers, which is why Whirlpool says to clean dispensers every 30 cycles or when a musty smell appears.
Whirlpool also separates a sewage-like smell from a musty one. A blocked or kinked drain hose, a clogged P-trap, or a vent or drain issue can cause sewage-like smells, and Whirlpool says to consult a plumber if the smell is sewage-like or persists. That distinction saves time: a gasket cleaning will not fix a household drain.
Samsung’s maintenance schedule and drawer steps
Samsung’s Canadian odor page names four causes: leaving the door closed after washing, which traps moisture; too much detergent or softener; washing frequently with cold water only; and buildup in the door gasket or detergent drawer. Its schedule is easier to follow than a single big clean: leave the door and detergent drawer open after every wash; wipe the door, gasket and detergent area weekly; run a tub cleaning cycle monthly and, on front-loads, clean the pump filter about every 40 washes; and clean the detergent drawer and filter every one to three months.
For the gasket, Samsung says to pull it back and wipe inside the folds with a soft cloth, using warm water and mild soap for buildup, then dry it completely before closing the door. For the drawer, pull it out until it stops, remove the inserts if possible, rinse it with warm water, scrub with a soft brush, dry fully and reinsert it all the way; Samsung also says to brush the drawer recess. The release method differs: on a front-load, hold the release lever while pulling the drawer out.
For the pump filter on a front-load, Samsung says to let the water from a hot cycle cool first, open the access panel and drain the water through the small emergency hose by twisting off its cap, then turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it and brush off lint and debris. Reinsert it clockwise, replace the hose cap, secure the hose in its clip and close the panel. If a model’s access panel or filter looks different, follow the manual instead.
Clean-cycle instructions are model-specific
Whirlpool’s routine is Clean Washer once a month. It permits an affresh tablet or liquid chlorine bleach for the models in its instructions, but excludes thickened, easy-pour and no-splash bleach. Follow the detergent or bleach compartment specified in the model manual. Whirlpool also recommends leaving the door partly open on some steam models after the cleaning cycle.
Samsung’s routine is different. For its listed odor procedure, use liquid bleach in the detergent compartment up to the MAX line, not the bleach compartment, then run Self Clean immediately. The tub must be empty. Samsung then says to clean the tub, run Rinse+Spin, repeat the routine as directed, leave the door open and clean the pump filter. Do not move the bleach to a different compartment or use a different cycle based on Whirlpool’s instructions.
Samsung recommends Self Clean monthly or after 30 to 40 loads. The page says the cycle can take about one hour for a top-load washer and four hours for a front-load washer. Those times are from Samsung’s guidance; the display on a specific model may show a different cycle duration. If the cleaning cycle does not remove the odor, do not increase the bleach amount.
Stop and call a pro
Stop the washer if a burning smell persists after the first few cycles, if the washer leaks from an internal area, or if cleaning requires opening the cabinet. A persistent smell after the manufacturer’s routine may come from a drain installation or internal part that the owner cannot safely inspect. Give the technician the model, odor description and cleaning steps already completed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave a front-load washer door open?
Whirlpool recommends leaving the door open between loads. Samsung says to dry the tub and door seal and leave the door open after its cleaning routine.
How often should I run Self Clean?
Samsung recommends Self Clean every month or every 30 to 40 loads. Whirlpool recommends its Clean Washer cycle monthly. Follow your model's instructions.
Why does my washer smell like a sewer?
Samsung lists an improperly positioned drain hose as a possible cause. Its page gives two different insertion thresholds, so check the exact installation instructions for your model rather than relying on one universal depth.
