Which clue fits best?
Prefer to read it? Quick checklist
  1. Which clue fits best?
    • The display shows OFF, OF or a code: The control is off or demo mode is active: Lights work but neither compartment cools, or the display shows OF, OFF, or showroom mode. (likely)
    • A door is not closing or sealing: A door is not sealing: A door does not close by itself, a gasket is visibly dirty, or a dollar bill slips out without resistance. (likely)
    • Food covers an air vent: Food blocks an air outlet: Packages sit directly against interior vents or the appliance is packed so tightly that air cannot move. (likely)
    • None of those: What changed before cooling became weak?
      • The room is unusually hot or cold: The room is outside the operating range: The refrigerator is in an unusually hot area or a cold garage, and its runtime has changed with the room. (possible)
      • The appliance was installed or loaded recently: The unit has not stabilized after installation or a large load: Cooling changed after installation, a power interruption, a control adjustment, or adding warm groceries. (likely)
      • There was a power interruption: The control needs attention after a power event: The display shows a power alert, the controls are blank, or cooling stopped after an outage. (possible)
      • No recent change: After the visible checks, what remains?
        • The manual identifies user-cleanable coils: A model-specific condenser needs cleaning: The model has accessible condenser coils and the manual or manufacturer says they need cleaning. (possible)
        • Airflow is absent or a fan sounds different: A fan may need professional diagnosis: Airflow is absent and the refrigerator remains warm after the easy control, door and vent checks. (possible)
        • A defrost code or persistent frost remains: A defrost-system fault may be present: A GE display shows dE or persistent frost blocks airflow after the accessible checks. (possible)
        • Both sections stay warm: A sealed-system or compressor fault needs service: Both sections stay warm despite correct controls and clear airflow; only a technician can confirm the cause. (possible)

Start by separating a control problem from a cooling-system problem. This refrigerator not cooling hub puts the checks in an order that avoids treating a long runtime or a warm shelf as proof of a failed compressor. Note whether the freezer is warm too, what the display says, and what changed just before the problem began.

Two minutes, no tools

  1. Read the display before changing anything. A showroom or Cooling Off mode can leave the lights on while stopping cooling. Write down any letters or numbers exactly; a code can change the next step.
  2. Open both compartments briefly. Decide whether the freezer is also warm. If it is cold while the fresh-food section is warm, the problem is more likely to involve air distribution between sections; use the separate freezer-cold, refrigerator-warm guide.
  3. Look for blocked vents, a door left ajar, recent loading of warm food, an installation, or a power outage. Do not pull the refrigerator from the wall or remove a service panel.

Ten causes, from simple checks to service

1. The control is off or demo mode is active

The control is off or demo mode is active

Lights work but neither compartment cools, or the display shows OF, OFF, or showroom mode.

When the lights work but the compartments are warm, first look for a cooling-off or showroom mode. Samsung lists “OF OF,” “O FF,” “OFF OFF,” and moving temperature bars as Cooling Off Mode indicators. Whirlpool also says showroom mode can leave lights on without cooling. GE lists a demo-mode code among its common refrigerator codes.

Use the exact model manual to exit the mode. The Samsung instructions vary by display panel, so a button sequence from another model is not a safe guess. If no demo indicator appears, check that neither compartment control is set to Off and compare the displayed setting with the manual.

If the display looks normal and a correct setting does not restore cooling, move to the door and airflow checks. Do not keep cycling controls or power as a substitute for identifying a displayed code.

2. A door is not sealing

A door is not sealing

A door does not close by itself, a gasket is visibly dirty, or a dollar bill slips out without resistance.

dollar bill, damp cloth

A gasket leak lets warm room air enter and makes the compressor work harder. GE says the door should close by itself. Its leveling guidance has the front slightly higher than the rear; GE’s check is whether a door opened halfway closes by itself at about a 45-degree angle. Inspect the gasket for visible gaps or dirt.

Samsung suggests a dollar-bill check: close the door on the bill and feel for slight resistance when you pull it. A loose result can also come from a misaligned door, so repeat at another spot before deciding the gasket has failed. Samsung recommends cleaning the seal monthly with a damp cloth and soap.

Do not pull or stretch the gasket. If the door does not close on its own, first make sure food or a shelf is not in the way. A torn seal or a door that remains misaligned needs model-specific service advice.

3. Food blocks an air outlet

Food blocks an air outlet

Packages sit directly against interior vents or the appliance is packed so tightly that air cannot move.

Cold air cannot reach the compartments if containers cover the vents. GE says not to block circulation near the rear with tall items. Samsung says to leave food about 2 inches from its vents. Those are manufacturer-specific instructions, so use the spacing in your manual when it differs.

Move only loose packages that visibly cover a vent. Keep food covered and leave room for air to circulate. GE notes that a freezer at least three-quarters full can help with temperature recovery, while Samsung says its refrigerator should remain at least two-thirds full. These are different recommendations from different manufacturers; do not combine them into one universal fill target.

If the vents are clear but only the fresh-food section is warm, use the focused freezer-works diagnosis rather than assuming the whole cooling system has failed.

4. The room is too hot or too cold

The room is outside the operating range

The refrigerator is in an unusually hot area or a cold garage, and its runtime has changed with the room.

Installation conditions matter. GE gives a room range of 60°F to 110°F for the models covered by its guide. Whirlpool gives 55°F to 110°F for the cited French-door refrigerator and says it is intended for indoor household use. Samsung says a room below 55°F can make some refrigerators work harder. The limits vary by model and source.

Look at the appliance’s surroundings: a cold garage, direct sun, a nearby oven or blocked base grille can change how it runs. Whirlpool advises against installing near a heat source or behind a cabinet door that blocks ventilation. Do not use one manufacturer’s range as the rating for another model.

Correct the surrounding condition only when it is safe and the manual allows it. If the space is outside the model’s range, moving the appliance is an installation decision; do not drag a connected refrigerator yourself.

5. The unit has not stabilized after installation or a large load

GE says to allow about 24 hours after installation for cooling to stabilize. Whirlpool also says a freezer can need 24 hours to reach proper temperature, and a large load of warm food may take hours to recover. Frequent door openings add warm air while the compartments recover.

Record when the refrigerator was installed, when the last control change happened, and when warm food was added. Avoid repeated adjustments: Whirlpool says to wait at least 24 hours between control changes. GE lists different temperature ranges for fresh food and freezer sections, while Samsung gives separate setpoints and reset waiting periods.

After the model’s waiting window, check the temperature display again. If it remains warm or a code appears, use the brand-specific page or arrange service rather than extending the wait indefinitely.

6. A model-specific condenser needs cleaning

A model-specific condenser needs cleaning

The model has accessible condenser coils and the manual or manufacturer says they need cleaning.

vacuum with brush attachment

Do not assume every refrigerator has user-cleanable condenser coils. GE says most models made since 2001 have coils that do not need cleaning; compact units and small top-freezer models are exceptions. Whirlpool recommends cleaning every 2 to 3 months only in homes with grease, dust or pets, and says some models should be cleaned by a certified technician.

Check the model manual first. If it identifies user-accessible coils, disconnect power before cleaning and follow that manual. The listed brush vacuum is a planning tool, not permission to remove a panel or reach near wiring or moving parts.

When the manual does not describe owner cleaning, skip this check and call for service. A dirty coil is only one possibility and does not confirm a compressor problem.

7. The control needs attention after a power event

The control needs attention after a power event

The display shows a power alert, the controls are blank, or cooling stopped after an outage.

A refrigerator may show a power-failure alert or need its control restarted after an interruption. GE lists PF as a power-failure code and says that after service its panel can be reset by disconnecting the refrigerator for 30 seconds. Samsung’s troubleshooting page describes a two-minute unplug or breaker-off reset.

Those are not interchangeable instructions for every brand. Follow the model manual and avoid the breaker if it is tripping. Whirlpool says some models need to be turned back on after an outage or surge, and its outage alert may sound three times.

After an approved reset, wait for the displayed temperature to update. Samsung says its panel may take up to four hours to show the temperature and up to 28 hours for the refrigerator to reach it. The same Samsung page gives different service timing later; its directions are not fully consistent, so note the observed times and contact Samsung if cooling stays off.

Fans move air across the evaporator and condenser. iFixit describes fan failures among the possible causes on Frigidaire refrigerators; GE’s sound guide also describes changes in fan speed as the unit responds to door openings. A missing airflow clue does not prove a fan motor has failed.

Keep panels closed. Note whether both compartments are warm, whether you hear a change in fan sound, and whether a service code appears. Do not reach through vents or test the motor. The repair range comes from Fixr’s refrigerator cost guide, a secondary estimate, and is displayed with its check date.

A technician should distinguish a fan fault from blocked vents, frost, a control issue or another cooling problem before quoting a part.

GE lists dE as a defrost-system code meaning the system has not operated properly in the last 24 hours. That code is a reason to arrange diagnosis, not a direction to remove an interior panel. GE says its list contains only common codes, so an unlisted display should be checked against the exact model.

Frost that covers vents can also restrict airflow. Samsung says to clear frost from rear vents as part of its guidance, but that does not explain how to repair a failed defrost component. Do not chip ice or remove a panel to reach a heater or sensor.

Write down the code and model number, then contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. The cost range is Fixr’s secondary estimate for thermostat work; it does not identify which defrost part has failed.

Compressor and sealed-system problems belong at the end of the diagnosis. iFixit lists them among technician-level possibilities after door seals, airflow, fans, sensors and starting components. A warm refrigerator alone cannot identify a compressor fault, and none of the safe checks above proves that refrigerant is missing.

Do not open the sealed system, handle refrigerant, test a capacitor or touch compressor wiring. Call a qualified technician to diagnose the system and provide a written estimate. Ask what checks rule out a control, fan or defrost issue before approving a major repair.

Fixr reports a compressor repair range and a typical refrigerator repair range. Compare the verified estimate with the cost of a replacement and the appliance’s condition; Fixr says not to spend more than half the price of a new refrigerator on repairs. The displayed range is not a local quote.

Read the symptom before the part

The temperature pattern narrows the next step. If both compartments are warm, check mode, recent installation, room conditions and power history. If the freezer is cold and the fresh-food section is warm, check clear vents and use the dedicated refrigerator-warm, freezer-cold guide. A refrigerator that runs for much of the day may still be operating normally: GE says many models are designed to run 80% to 90% of the time and may approach 100% in humid heat. Whirlpool gives a different 40% to 80% range under normal temperatures. These figures describe different manufacturers and conditions, not a universal pass/fail test.

GE lists FF for checking frozen food, PF for a power failure, CI for the ice maker, DE for demo mode, dE for a defrost fault and CC for temperature controls. Check the code against GE’s own page and the model manual. Do not infer that a code from another brand has the same meaning.

Compare the temperature guidance by brand

GE gives average ranges of −5°F to 8°F for a freezer and 34°F to 42°F for the fresh-food section. Samsung’s reset page says the panel may take up to four hours to show a temperature and the refrigerator may take up to 28 hours to reach it. Its same page also gives a shorter service point after a reset, so the waiting instructions do not align cleanly; record the display and ask Samsung if the unit remains warm. Whirlpool tells owners to wait 24 hours between setting adjustments and says a freezer can take 24 hours to reach proper temperature. None of these windows should be copied to another brand without checking its manual.

The food pattern is useful too. A refrigerator that has just been installed or loaded with warm groceries may need time to recover. A refrigerator that remains warm after the brand’s wait, shows a defrost code or has no airflow deserves a service call. For Samsung’s “OF OF” or moving-bar display, look at the demo-mode check above; for GE’s lowercase dE, do not open the freezer panel. Keep the code and model number with your notes so the service provider can match the correct instructions.

Repair cost and when to call

The two technician-level causes above show Fixr planning ranges for a fan, thermostat and compressor. Fixr also reports an overall repair range and a replacement range; those are estimates, not a diagnosis or a quote for your address. Fixr says not to spend more than half the price of a new unit on repairs. Compare a written estimate with a comparable replacement, especially when a major sealed-system repair is proposed. For the broader comparison, use the appliance repair cost guide once that page is published, or the current service-call fee guide.

Call a technician if the refrigerator stays warm after the model’s stabilization period, a defrost code returns, a fan appears to have stopped, or cooling depends on opening a sealed or electrical area. Stop sooner for smoke, burning smells, damaged wiring or repeated breaker trips. Keep the model and serial label information available; the model-number guide explains where Whirlpool and LG place some labels.

For other refrigerator symptoms, compare water inside the refrigerator and ice-maker problems. Those guides address separate water and ice paths.

Brand-specific guides

Frequently asked questions

How long should a refrigerator take to cool after installation?

GE says to allow about 24 hours for cooling to stabilize. Samsung gives a longer window after a reset, so follow the instructions for your brand and model.

Is it normal for a refrigerator to run all the time?

GE says many refrigerators are designed to run 80% to 90% of the time and may approach continuous operation in humid heat. Runtime alone does not prove a failure.

What does OF OF mean on a Samsung refrigerator?

Samsung lists OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF and moving temperature bars as signs of Cooling Off Mode, which disables cooling. Control steps vary by panel.

Should I clean refrigerator coils?

Not on every model. GE says most models made since 2001 have coils that do not need cleaning; compact and small top-freezer models are exceptions. Unplug before any permitted cleaning.

When should I call a refrigerator technician?

Call if the unit stays warm after the model-specific stabilization period, a service code remains, or the likely cause involves a fan, defrost component, compressor or sealed system. Do not work on refrigerant lines.
