If your Frigidaire is warm inside, Frigidaire’s own owner pages give a short, ordered list of checks, and most of them cost nothing. This page follows that list and adds what the freezer version of the page and Frigidaire Canada’s temperature FAQ say. It is the Frigidaire companion to the refrigerator not-cooling hub, which covers the checks that apply to every brand.
Frigidaire’s checks, in the order the owner page lists them
1. A newly installed unit. Frigidaire first asks you to confirm the refrigerator was installed correctly according to the installation guide and the use and care manual. It specifies a dedicated outlet: a 115- or 120-volt individual, properly grounded branch circuit with a three-prong receptacle, protected by a 15- or 20-amp breaker or time-delay fuse. Its statement is plain: the unit needs 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize.
2. No power. Check the control panel or the interior lights. If the refrigerator is plugged into a GFI outlet, check whether it has tripped and reset it if necessary. The freezer page adds that you should allow 24 hours afterward.
3. A recent power outage. Frigidaire’s instruction is to find the breaker for the refrigerator in the home’s breaker box, switch it off, and then allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize. The 24 hours is the point: a refrigerator that lost power overnight often looks broken for the first several hours after it returns.
4. An unsuitable location. Frigidaire says not to install the unit where the room temperature drops below 55°F. A refrigerator in an unheated garage or porch can stop cooling properly in winter because the room is colder than the compartments.
5. The wrong temperature settings. The factory suggested settings are 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. The acceptable refrigerator range is 33°F to 47°F, and the acceptable freezer range is −6°F to 6°F. If someone turned the control to the coldest or warmest end, bring it back to the suggested setting and wait.
6. Blocked vents. Frigidaire writes that blocked vents will prevent airflow and the unit will not be able to cool properly. Move or clear any items in front of the vents.
7. A door left open too long. Make sure nothing obstructs a door and that it closes properly.
8. A poor door seal. A weak seal causes unstable temperatures. Test it with a dollar bill: close the door on the bill and tug it. You should feel some resistance. If the bill slides out easily or falls to the floor, the seal is too weak. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and test again.
9. Still not cooling. If the refrigerator was installed in the past 30 days, contact your installer. If it was installed more than 30 days ago, contact Frigidaire to schedule service.
The page does not address condenser coils, the defrost system or operating modes. It links to a separate frost build-up article for defrost-related issues.
What the freezer page adds
Frigidaire’s freezer version of the page covers the same ground and adds three items that are worth knowing for a refrigerator too.
- Listen for the unit working. Compressor hum, fan noise and refrigerant gurgling mean the unit is trying to cool. If it has run for 24 hours and still is not cooling, schedule service. Silence is a different signal: no sound and no light points back to power.
- Frost buildup. Heavy frost can stop the door from closing properly or reduce airflow. The page does not say how to remove it, so see the freezer frost buildup guide for what the official pages say about defrosting.
- Overstuffing. Remove a few items so air can circulate, do not let food block the air vents and leave space around items.
What Frigidaire Canada’s temperature FAQ says
Frigidaire Canada’s top-freezer FAQ explains a point that confuses many owners of that style. It says changing the refrigerator control also changes temperatures in both the refrigerator and the freezer, so the control you turn for a warm refrigerator also changes the freezer. It says to wait 24 hours after adjusting a control before judging the temperature result, and to keep food from blocking the vents because a fan circulates air through the compartments.
The FAQ also covers the zero setting: setting the refrigerator control to zero may stop the compressor on some models, but it does not fully power off the unit. To turn the refrigerator off completely, unplug it. This is a Canadian, top-freezer-model page, so check your manual before relying on it for another style.
If ice and water have stopped too
A refrigerator that is warm often stops making ice, and Frigidaire’s no-ice page lists some of the same causes. It says a recently installed or powered-up unit needs 24 hours to stabilize before ice production, and that the same wait applies after an outage. It also lists a locked display, which blocks water and ice until you press and hold the lock key for three seconds. Check the lock before you decide the unit has failed.
Two other items on that page matter for a unit that is cooling poorly. A water filter should be replaced about every six months, and a new filter needs priming and purging. And a built-in shutoff stops dispensing after three minutes of continuous use to protect the motor; release the paddle to reset it. None of these is a cooling fault, but a family that sees “no ice, warm drinks” can mistake them for one. If the cooling problem is solved and ice is still missing, see the refrigerator ice-maker hub, and write down whether the freezer has reached its 0°F setting first, because the ice maker depends on it.
What to write down before you call
Frigidaire sends you to the installer within 30 days and to Frigidaire after that, and either one will ask the same questions. Note the model and serial number, the date of installation, whether there was a power outage, the current refrigerator and freezer settings, whether the interior light and panel work, whether you can hear the compressor, fan or gurgling, and whether the door seal passed the dollar-bill test. Having those answers ready saves a visit that would otherwise be spent finding out what you could have told them.

Frigidaire says the unit needs 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize after installation, and the same 24 hours after a power outage. Do not start moving settings or calling for service during that window.
Note the time the unit was plugged in, set it to the factory suggested temperatures and leave the doors closed as much as you can.
2. No power reaches the refrigerator

Check the control panel and the interior lights, and the GFI outlet if one is used. Frigidaire’s instruction is to reset the outlet if it has tripped. Do not use an extension cord or plug the unit into a power strip.
If the outlet trips again right away, stop and have an electrician look at the circuit; do not keep resetting it.
3. The settings are off or the room is too cold

Set the refrigerator near 37°F and the freezer near 0°F, which are Frigidaire’s factory suggestions, and stay inside its acceptable ranges of 33–47°F and −6°F to 6°F. Frigidaire says not to install the unit where the room drops below 55°F.
If the refrigerator is in a cold garage, moving it is an installation job. Ask the installer rather than dragging a connected unit across the floor.

Frigidaire says blocked vents prevent airflow so the unit cannot cool properly. Its freezer page adds that you should remove a few items so air can circulate and leave space around items.
Move food away from the vents, then wait 24 hours before deciding whether it helped.
5. A door is held open or the seal is weak

Look for anything that stops a door from closing, including a drawer or bin that is not pushed in. Frigidaire’s dollar-bill test: close the door on the bill and tug it, and some resistance is expected. Clean a gasket that fails with warm soapy water and test again.
A gasket that is torn or will not seal after cleaning needs a technician.

Stop and call a pro
Call Frigidaire or a qualified technician if the unit has had 24 hours and still does not cool, if the outlet trips, if you smell burning or if the compressor area is hot to the touch. Have the model number, the installation date, the settings and what you already tried.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Frigidaire refrigerator take to cool down?
Frigidaire says a new unit needs 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize, and the same applies after a power outage or a setting change.
What temperature should a Frigidaire refrigerator be set to?
Frigidaire's factory suggested settings are 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. Its acceptable ranges are 33–47°F and −6°F to 6°F.
Does setting the Frigidaire dial to zero turn it off?
Frigidaire Canada says zero may stop the compressor on some models but does not fully power off the refrigerator. Unplugging is required for a complete power-off.
