Samsung Refrigerator Not Making Ice: Reset and Defrost
Last updated
Samsung’s ice-maker sequence makes the temperature and bin checks especially useful. This Samsung ice maker guide keeps the steps tied to the Samsung support instructions: check the freezer, Ice Off setting, bin fit and water path before considering a part. The wider ice-maker hub compares thresholds across brands.
What to check first
Look at the freezer display and the Ice Off icon. Confirm that the bin is seated and that no paddle or stored item is in the way. If the refrigerator was installed recently or the temperature changed, wait for Samsung’s stated stabilization period. Do not remove a stuck bin by force.
Samsung’s checks, from settings to service
1. Ice Off is selected
Ice Off is selected
The Ice Off icon is lit, or the selected ice mode does not match the model's panel.

Samsung says the Ice Off icon should not be lit when you want ice. Some top-freezer models use an Ice On state; Family Hub models expose an ice control in Fridge Manager; SmartThings and dual-maker models may show separate controls. The visible label depends on the refrigerator.
Use the panel or app named in your model’s manual and verify the selection after you change it. On a dual maker, Samsung says to cycle until no Ice Off indicator is lit for the maker you intend to use. Do not copy a button sequence from a different panel.
If the setting is already on, continue to the temperature and bin checks. An on setting only removes one possible cause; it does not confirm that water reaches the ice mold.
2. The freezer is above the ice-making temperature
The freezer is above the ice-making temperature
The freezer is warmer than 0°F or has not stabilized after a setpoint change.

Samsung specifies 0°F or less for ice production. If the display is warmer than the selected setting, resolve the cooling issue first; this guide is not a substitute for Samsung refrigerator cooling checks. A refrigerator recently installed or restarted may not yet be at its target.
After the freezer reaches 0°F or less, Samsung instructs owners to turn on Power Freeze and wait three hours. Do not lower the setting repeatedly while waiting. A temperature change needs time to affect the ice maker.
If the display is above the setting after Samsung’s window, record the reading and any code. The troubleshooting source says a code can indicate that service is needed without further owner steps.
3. The ice bin is not seated correctly
The ice bin is not seated correctly
The bin is loose, tilted, frosted or does not sit in its locked position.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 10 minutes

The maker can stop if its bin is not fully in place. Samsung describes checking that the bin is locked into position and the freezer door closes properly. Frost on the bin is another clue to resolve before expecting the maker to operate.
If the bin is loose and moves freely, follow the removal and replacement instructions for the model. Samsung says to pull straight out and, on some designs, lift slightly. If the bin resists, stop; do not twist, pry or strike it.
After reseating, allow the appliance to continue its normal cycle. If frost or an ice block holds the assembly in place, call service rather than trying to thaw or dismantle it.
4. A paddle or ice pile makes the bin look full
The bin sensor reads a full bin
A paddle, stored food or ice piled to one side may block the full-bin sensor.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 10 minutes

Samsung says the ice bin should contain only ice. A scoop or food item can block a sensor and make the refrigerator interpret the bin as full. On dual Ice Bites models, Samsung notes that the bin’s scoop holder belongs at the front.
Remove loose items from the bin and distribute loose ice without reaching into the ejector. If a large frozen block prevents normal movement, stop. The manufacturer warns against forcing the maker or using a hair dryer.
When the bin is clear and properly seated, watch whether new ice appears through the next production window. If it does not, continue to water flow and filter rather than repeatedly removing and reinstalling the bin.
5. Water pressure is low
Water pressure is low
The dispenser line does not deliver 6 ounces in under 10 seconds, or reverse osmosis is installed.

- Moderate

- 15 minutes

- measuring cup, timer
Samsung specifies a minimum water pressure of 20 psi. Its flow check is whether the dispenser line fills 6 ounces, or three-quarters of a cup, in less than 10 seconds. The check applies to Samsung’s instructions; it is not a pressure standard for every refrigerator.
Samsung says reverse-osmosis systems can reduce pressure. If the dispenser flow is weak, note whether the home has reverse osmosis and whether flow changes when the filter is removed as the model instructions allow. Do not disconnect a hidden line or test a valve.
If flow remains low after the visible checks, the cause may be outside the ice maker. A plumber or appliance technician can determine whether the house supply, filter or refrigerator connection is restricting water.
6. The water filter is due or restricted
The water filter is due or restricted
The filter has reached 300 gallons, is about six months old, or flow improves when the model's test is done without it.

- Easy
- Time
- 10 minutes

Samsung says its refrigerator filters are rated for 300 gallons, roughly six months. A filter can restrict flow when it is overdue or not installed correctly. If water production changed immediately after a replacement, confirm that the cartridge matches the model and is seated as the manual describes.
Samsung’s troubleshooting directions include comparing flow with and without the filter. Perform that check only if the instructions for your refrigerator permit it. Do not run the appliance long-term without a required filter or improvise a bypass part.
When flow improves without the filter, replace it with the correct model and follow the stated post-install instructions. If flow stays weak, return to the pressure or supply question rather than buying another filter.
7. Samsung’s checks point to service

Samsung says to request service when there is no ice after the test sequence, a large block has a white wire hanging from it, ice coats the maker, or an error code remains. SmartThings-connected models may improve after a firmware update, but that does not replace service when the manufacturer directs it.
The test button can be held until one tone, for up to 10 seconds. Samsung says the test takes about six minutes in the fresh-food section and about 30 seconds in the freezer; at the end, the water valve may hum and add water. If no tone sounds, Samsung says to reset power for two minutes and repeat once.
Do not repeat the test after the tray has filled with water or ice. Samsung’s separate Ice Bites page warns that repeated tests can overflow the tray or jam ice. The Fixr cost range below is a secondary planning figure, not a Samsung quote or a diagnosis.
$350–$500Source: Refrigerator Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026What the test tells you
Samsung’s test button is diagnostic. A tone begins the test; the sound and water at its end help the technician or owner distinguish an unresponsive maker from a supply problem. The separate Ice Bites instructions say each maker has its own test button under the grille, above the bin; one tone means the test passes and multiple tones mean service is needed. Do not press the button repeatedly once the tray is filled.
Samsung’s separate Ice Bites page places both makers in the lower-left freezer section near the top, with Ice Bites on the right and cubed ice on the left. Each maker has its own test button. The page says to reach underneath the maker, below the grille and above the bin; do not press the button repeatedly after the tray has filled with water or ice. Repeated tests can overflow the tray or jam ice.
The water test can also reveal a connection issue without proving which part failed. Samsung lists models RS27T and RS22T with crossed water lines as a reason dispensing may not work correctly. If your model is one of those, tell service that the lines may be crossed; do not swap a water connection yourself. If the test completes but the maker remains empty, follow the separate checks for pressure, filter age and the model’s waiting period.
Samsung’s source gives two different wait references after troubleshooting: it says production normally starts in about three hours, then also says to contact service if there is no ice after three hours; another line says service is needed if the issue continues after two hours. Follow the exact model’s screen and service instructions, and share the elapsed time with Samsung rather than treating either number as a guaranteed repair threshold.
Cost and the next call
The repair range in the service card comes from Fixr, a secondary cost guide. It is not a Samsung parts price. Ask the technician what the test showed, whether water entered the tray, and whether the fault is in the supply, maker or control before approving repair. For charges unrelated to the part itself, use the appliance service-call fee guide.
Call Samsung or a qualified appliance technician if the maker remains empty after the stated wait, a code returns, ice coats the assembly or the bin will not release without force. Keep the model number handy; the model-number guide includes locations documented by Whirlpool and LG, while Samsung owners should use their model manual.
