    Safety Disclaimer

Read this before you open any appliance.

    • Cut the power first. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker. For a furnace or an electric dryer, switch off the breaker as well, because the unit may be wired directly.
    • Never work on gas. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company or emergency services from outside. Don't adjust gas valves or gas lines yourself.
    • Never open a sealed refrigerant system. Refrigerant work requires certification.
    • Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Air conditioners, furnaces and some appliances contain them. If a guide tells you to stop and call a professional, do it.
    • Water and electricity don't mix. Keep towels and a bucket nearby and dry your hands and the floor before touching any electrical part.
    • When in doubt, stop. A service call costs far less than an injury or a fire.
