- No: Is foam still visible in the tub, or does the display show a suds code?
- Yes: Excess detergent or suds are slowing the cycle: Foam remains in the tub, the load used non-HE detergent where required, or a Samsung or LG suds code appears. (likely)
- No: Is a single bulky item or uneven load still inside?
- Yes: An unbalanced load prevented a full spin: A single bulky item or uneven load remains wet and the washer has not completed a high-speed spin. (possible)
- No: Can you see a sharp bend or crushing in the exposed drain hose?
- Yes: The drain hose is kinked or routed too high: A visible hose is crushed or sharply bent, or its route does not match the installation instructions for the model. (likely)
- No: Is the nearby sink or household drain also slow or backing up?
- Yes: The standpipe or household drain is restricted: The washer hose looks clear but water drains slowly, backs up, or the nearby sink also drains slowly. (possible)
- No: Does your model manual identify an owner-accessible pump filter? Only some front-load models have one. Do not open an unclear access point.
- Yes, and it is due for cleaning: A front-load pump filter is obstructed: The washer is a front-load model with an accessible pump-filter door, and the model manual identifies that filter for owner cleaning. (possible)
- No, or I am not sure: The pump or another internal part needs service: Water remains after the safe checks, the tub only hums, the pump grinds, or the washer reports a fault that returns. (possible)

If a washer leaves water behind, the pump is not the first part to blame. Start with this washer not draining checklist: confirm the cycle finished, close the lid or door, and look for a kink in the exposed drain hose. Those checks separate a simple interruption from a blockage without opening the machine.
What to check in two minutes
Read the display before pressing anything. A paused washer may be waiting between stages, and advancing a manual dial during a pause can interrupt pumping on some GE models. If the display shows a code, write down the exact characters and the washer type. Similar-looking codes do not mean the same thing across brands.
Look at the lid or door. Remove only clothing that is visibly caught at the opening, then close it normally. Do not push on the lock or try to defeat it. Check the selected cycle and spin setting: a delicate or hand-wash cycle can leave more water because it spins more slowly. A bulky item by itself can also hold water or throw off the load balance.
Follow the visible drain hose from the washer to the standpipe or sink connection. Look for a sharp fold, a crushed section, or something pressing on it. Do not pull the washer out if doing so would strain water or electrical connections. If the hose disappears behind the appliance, use the installation guide for the model rather than guessing at a height.
If the kitchen sink is also slow, the shared household drain is a stronger possibility than a washer-only pump problem. Run the sink briefly and observe it; do not disconnect plumbing while the washer contains water. Note whether water rises in the standpipe or backs up into the sink. That observation helps a plumber distinguish a house-drain restriction from an appliance issue.
Read the symptom before replacing a part
“Not draining” can mean the washer stopped before the drain phase, pumped slowly, or completed a low-speed spin with damp clothes. These are different outcomes. A paused display points toward a cycle state. Foam in the tub points toward detergent or an added suds-reduction phase. A visible kink points toward the hose. A slow sink points outside the washer.
Codes also narrow the next check without proving that a part has failed. LG lists OE for a drain problem; it directs the owner to inspect the hose and clean the drain filter. LG’s LE indicates an overloaded or locked motor, and the listed response is to let it rest for 30 minutes. Samsung lists nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC and 1 5C as drain-related codes, while OE, 0E, OC and 0C indicate overflow. Use the code list for the brand and model shown on the machine.
GE describes pauses of up to three minutes between cycle stages. On certain GE models from 2015 onward, a flashing RINSE light or “Po” means the washer took too long to pump out. GE recommends Start or Drain & Spin and a check for a crushed hose. Do not treat a pause as a failure if the cycle is still progressing.
Causes, from simple checks to service

Check whether the display is paused, the selected cycle was canceled, or the washer is between stages. GE says some models pause for as long as three minutes. If the control shows an active pause, let it finish before changing the selection.
Whirlpool says an interrupted cycle can leave draining incomplete. GE warns that advancing a manual dial during a pause after agitation may lose the pump-out step. Use the normal Start or Drain & Spin control only when the model’s instructions call for it. If the same interruption returns, record the display and ask service to check the control rather than repeatedly restarting.

A washer may stop draining or spinning when it does not detect a closed lid or locked door. Look for a garment caught at the edge and close the lid or door as designed. Do not push or pry on the latch. GE says no GE top-load washer spins with its lid raised; LG lists dE as a door-lock problem.
Samsung’s US code list includes several door codes, including dS, dE, dE1 and dE2. The exact code varies by model. If the door closes but the warning remains, stop at the display and use the model’s manual or service channel. Do not remove the lid or door lock to test it.
3. Excess detergent or suds are slowing the cycle

Too much detergent can interfere with pumping and spinning, according to Whirlpool. Use the detergent type intended for the washer and do not add extra product to compensate for a wet load. Whirlpool associates Sud or Sd with excess suds; Samsung lists SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d and SUdS. LG says a SUD event can add a suds-reduction phase of about two hours.
That longer cycle is not, by itself, evidence of a broken pump. Let the washer complete the response described for its code. If suds return with the recommended detergent, note the product and cycle and ask the manufacturer or technician about the model. Do not mix cleaning chemicals to force the foam down.

Inspect only the part of the hose you can see without moving the appliance. Whirlpool recommends using the hose guide and securing the hose as shown in the installation instructions. GE says a hose that is crushed or routed too high can delay pump-out. LG gives a pedestal-model drain-height limit of 53 inches or less; that figure does not apply to every washer.
Whirlpool’s drain page gives a standpipe range of 30 to 96 inches. Its separate “Not Spinning” pages give 39 to 96 inches. Those source pages do not agree on the lower limit. Check the installation manual for your exact model instead of combining or averaging the figures. 5. The standpipe or household drain is restricted
The standpipe or household drain is restricted
The washer hose looks clear but water drains slowly, backs up, or the nearby sink also drains slowly.

When a sink and washer share a slow drain, the restriction may be in the household plumbing. A washer can also pump slowly into a restricted standpipe. GE suggests a simple standpipe observation: remove the hose only if the model instructions allow it and the area is safe, then pour a quart of water into the standpipe. If it does not drain, GE says to call a plumber. Do not do this with a full tub or an unstable hose.
Do not tape over the standpipe opening. Whirlpool’s installation guidance allows air at the drain opening and warns against sealing it. If water spills or the standpipe backs up, stop the cycle and call a plumber rather than trying repeated drain runs.
6. A front-load pump filter is obstructed
A front-load pump filter is obstructed
The washer is a front-load model with an accessible pump-filter door, and the model manual identifies that filter for owner cleaning.

- towel, shallow container
Only some front-load models have an owner-accessible drain-pump filter. Whirlpool says debris, lint or small objects can block it. Follow the manual for your model’s cleaning steps. Do not assume a top-load washer has the same filter.
Where the manual permits access, Whirlpool’s general guidance is to switch the washer off and drain water before cleaning. Keep a towel and shallow container nearby. The washer may retain water, so do not open a filter cover if you cannot contain the release or if the access point is unclear. If the manual does not identify a consumer-cleanable filter, stop and arrange service.
7. An unbalanced load prevented a full spin
An unbalanced load prevented a full spin
A single bulky item or uneven load remains wet and the washer has not completed a high-speed spin.

A single bulky item or uneven load can make the washer reduce the spin speed. Whirlpool says the machine may try to correct an imbalance by adding water and turning gently; if that fails, some models show an error and may need the clothes redistributed. A low-spin or no-spin setting can also leave more water even when draining itself worked.
Wait until the cycle has ended, then redistribute the load and select the model’s appropriate spin or Drain & Spin option. GE lists “bALAnCINg” or a flashing SPIN light on certain models from 2015 onward. If the washer repeatedly fails with ordinary balanced loads, note the behavior and call for service.

A steady hum with no water movement, a grinding sound, or a tub that remains full after the external checks needs a technician. GE says a full tub with only a hum is a service condition. Do not reach into the pump, turn an impeller, remove a panel, or test wiring. Those steps are outside the source-backed owner checks for this guide.
The $300–$400Source: Washing Machine Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026 is Fixr’s secondary repair estimate. It does not diagnose your machine or guarantee that a pump is the failed part. Ask the technician what they found in the hose, filter and household drain before approving a pump replacement. For visit and labor terms, see the service-call fee guide.
How the drain path fits together
The washer pumps water through its drain hose and into a standpipe or household drain. A front-load design may also route water through a pump filter that the owner can access on some models. The filter is not universal, and the diagrams below are reference aids, not disassembly instructions. A clear hose does not prove that the pump is good; it only removes one visible cause from the list.
- Lid Switch
- Door Lock
- Drum
- Agitator
- Belt
- Motor
- Coupling
- Drain Pump
- Drain Hose
- Pump Filter
- Standpipe
- Drain Loop
- Inlet Valve
- Shock Absorber
- Dispenser
Use the diagram to name the visible hose, tub or accessible filter when you describe the problem. Internal parts such as the pump, motor and belt are labeled for identification only. Do not open the cabinet to reach them.
Why washer type and brand change the next check
A top-load washer and a front-load washer do not expose the same owner checks. Whirlpool says some front-load models have a pump filter that needs occasional cleaning; that does not mean every front-load washer uses the same access door. Use the exact model manual before opening a filter cover. A top-load washer usually does not give the owner an accessible drain hose or filter door, so focus first on the lid, display, load and standpipe.
Brand codes help only when they are read in the right list. LG’s OE is a drain code, while LG’s LE points to a motor overload or lock condition. Samsung groups several display forms under a drain issue and a different group under overflow. GE’s “Po” and flashing RINSE light are tied to a slow pump-out on specified newer models. Whirlpool’s F9 E1 means the washer took longer than expected to drain; its page says the issue is normally a drain time longer than eight minutes. A code tells you which path to inspect, not which replacement part to order.
Keep measurements attached to their source and washer type. GE’s cited guidance gives an eight-foot maximum drain height for standard models and five feet for compact or portable machines. LG’s cited figure applies to pedestal models. Whirlpool’s drain page and spin pages publish different minimum standpipe heights. Those differences are a reason to find the installation sheet, not to force every washer into one measurement. If you cannot identify the model, photograph its label and use the model-number guide before asking for parts or service.
What to tell a technician
Write down the brand, model number, exact code, cycle name and whether the washer is front-load or top-load. Note whether the tub is full, whether the nearby sink is slow, and whether you hear a hum, grinding or no pump sound. Those observations are more useful than a guess that the pump has failed.
If the problem is mainly that clothes remain wet, compare the washer not spinning guide as well. If both spinning and draining fail together, the washer not spinning or draining guide covers that overlap. For exact code meanings, use the Samsung washer error-code list or Whirlpool washer error-code list when those brands apply.
Repair cost and replacement
The low-risk checks above can rule out a paused cycle, suds, an unbalanced load, an obvious hose kink and a shared drain problem before you pay for a diagnosis. If the washer still will not pump water, get a written estimate that separates the part, labor and visit charge. The pump range in the cause card is a national planning estimate from Fixr, not a local service quote.
Compare a written repair estimate with a new washer that meets the same needs. Fixr’s secondary comparison is one input after the failed part is confirmed; do not apply a rule to a guessed pump diagnosis. Ask the technician to separate the diagnostic visit from the repair estimate.
When to stop
Stop using the washer if water is overflowing, a breaker trips repeatedly, wiring is damaged or you smell burning. Keep the cabinet closed. Call an appliance technician for an internal pump, motor, lock or control problem, and call a plumber when the household drain itself backs up. If water is on the floor, protect yourself from electrical contact and follow the appliance manual’s emergency instructions.
If your Samsung or Whirlpool washer shows a code while it fails to drain, the Samsung washer code list and the Whirlpool washer code list give each maker’s own drain-related steps.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there still water in my washer after the cycle?
A paused cycle, excess suds, a hose restriction or a front-load pump filter can slow draining. Check the displayed cycle and visible hose before assuming the pump failed.
Can too much detergent stop a washer from draining?
Yes. Whirlpool says excess detergent can interfere with pumping water and spinning. Use the detergent type and amount specified for your model.
Does every washer have a drain-pump filter?
No. Whirlpool says the filter is present on some front-load models. Check the manual for your model; the source pages do not give one universal cleaning procedure.
When should I call a technician?
Call when water remains after the safe checks, the washer only hums or grinds, a fault returns, or an inspection would require opening a panel.
