For an LG washer that will not spin, read the code first. UE usually points to an unbalanced load; OE points to drainage; dE points to the door lock. Those clues lead to different checks and help avoid replacing a part that has not been diagnosed.

Start with the UE load check

LG says UE means the current load is unbalanced. Clothes can collect on one side, a load can be too large or too small, or the washer may not be level. Reposition the laundry and close the door before pressing Start/Pause again.

LG recommends a load around two-thirds of the drum. For pillows and cushions, remove the filling and wash only the cover. Use Duvet for blankets and Sportswear for padded jackets, with medium spin. If you wash items in mesh laundry nets, fill each net to about two-thirds and wash two or three nets with other laundry. Those instructions are specific to LG’s cited guidance.

If the load is very small, LG says to add one or two similar items. If UE appears at the end and the clothing is still wet, rearrange the items, close the door and press Start/Pause. LG top-load washers may attempt to rebalance up to three times before displaying the code.

Causes, from load balance to service

1. UE indicates an unbalanced load

UE indicates an unbalanced load

UE appears, clothes are gathered on one side or the laundry remains very wet at cycle end.

Redistribute clothing that is bunched on one side. A load that is too large or too small can both trigger an unbalance issue. If a single item is heavy, add similar items or use the cycle LG lists for that type of laundry.

For pillows and cushions, LG says to remove the filling and wash the cover only. Use Duvet for blankets and Sportswear for padded jackets, with medium spin. Do not use a general cycle if LG specifies a dedicated one for that load.

2. The washer is not level

The washer is not level

The washer rocks or repeatedly reports imbalance with different loads.

Tools
wrench, level

Press on opposite corners to check whether the washer rocks. LG says the washer should stand on level, solid flooring. If it tilts, adjust the feet on the low side with a wrench and check the top with a level. Tighten the lock nuts and make sure all four feet rest on the floor.

Do not tip a stacked washer or reach beneath it while it is running. If the appliance is too heavy to adjust safely, ask an installer to level it.

3. A foreign object is caught in the drum or agitator

An object is caught in the drum or agitator

A coin, zipper, button or other object is visible in the drum or agitator area.

Difficulty

Tools
tweezers

LG lists coins, zippers and buttons among objects that can interfere with the drum or agitator. Turn the washer off and check only the visible, accessible area. Use tweezers for a small object that is easy to reach.

Do not pry on the agitator or reach into a gap where an object is stuck. If the object is trapped under a component, call service.

4. OE indicates a drain problem

OE indicates a drain problem

OE appears or water remains in the tub after the cycle.

Difficulty
Moderate
Time

OE is LG’s drain indication. Check the exposed hose for a bend and see whether water remains in the tub. If the washer has a front-load pump filter, clean it only when the model manual identifies it as owner-accessible.

For a combined drain-and-spin symptom, use the washer not-spinning-or-draining guide. Do not open the pump housing or pull out a connected appliance.

5. dE indicates a door-lock issue

dE indicates a door-lock issue

dE or a related door code appears, or the door does not latch normally.

Easy
Time

dE means the door is not locking as expected. Check for laundry or an object caught at the seal and close the door normally. On a top-load model, dL can indicate a latch issue; use the code list for your model type.

Do not bypass the door lock. If dE or dL returns when the door is clear, arrange service.

6. LE or CE indicates a motor or current fault

LE or CE indicates a motor or current fault

LE, LE1 or CE appears and returns after the model-specific reset.

Difficulty
Pro
Time
30 minutes

LG lists LE as a motor-overload indication; the guidance says to let the washer rest for 30 minutes. For CE, LG says to unplug the unit for ten seconds. Do these steps only when the plug is dry and safely accessible.

If the same code returns, stop. Do not test the motor or control board. Contact LG service and provide the complete code.

7. The drum still will not spin after safe checks

The drum still will not spin after safe checks

A model-specific test does not turn the drum or the same code repeatedly returns.

LG’s drum test uses Power, Rinse & Spin, then Start/Pause. After the washer fills and starts rinsing, pause it, turn it off and on, then select a high spin speed. If the drum spins during the test, adjust the load and use the appropriate cycle.

If the drum still does not move, or an error returns, call LG service. Do not open the cabinet or replace a motor or clutch based on the test alone.

Top-load washers: lowercase uE versus uppercase UE

LG’s top-load page makes a distinction the front-load page does not. A lowercase uE means the washer is still trying: it fills with water to separate the items, drains and attempts to spin again, repeating up to three times. An uppercase UE means those three tries failed and the washer cannot rebalance the load on its own. LG says the code can be resolved without a technician.

LG’s order for a top-load UE starts with an empty-drum test. Empty the drum, power on, choose Rinse and Spin and press Start; the cycle takes about 20 minutes. If uE, UE or Ub appears even with nothing inside, LG says the washer is not working properly and needs repair. If the empty cycle finishes, move to leveling and loading.

For leveling, LG tells owners to open the lid and look at the plastic guard around the drum. If one side is more exposed, raise the side the tub is leaning toward by turning the leg bolts clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower the washer. LG warns to adjust the legs only as far as necessary, since legs extended too far can cause vibration. Then run a test load of about six pounds on Rinse and Spin and watch for rocking in the spin. If the washer slides on a slippery floor during unbalanced spins, LG suggests non-skid pads under it.

LG’s load advice for top-loads is specific. With a small load, add items or reduce the spin speed. With a single bulky item such as a pillow or rug, add a few items to spread the weight. With sheets and blankets, untangle them and redistribute by hand. On Cotton/Normal or Heavy Duty, LG says adding the Fabric Softener option changes the jet-spray rinse to a deep rinse, which spreads the load better, and the Perm Press/Casual cycle uses more water and a deep tub rinse. LG adds that extra noise or vibration as the drum speeds up or slows down at the end of a spin is normal.

Front-load washers: shipping bolts and the foam block

If an LG front-load washer shakes or reports UE right after installation, LG’s vibration page lists shipping hardware before the load. Open the door and push the tub forward and back: if it moves, the bolts are already out. If it does not, the rear fixing bolts must be removed with the provided wrench and the four hole caps from the accessory pack installed. LG warns that running the washer without removing the shipping bolts and retainers can cause severe vibration and noise and lead to permanent damage. LG also says to check for a foam shipping block wedged under the tub, and to use two people to tilt the washer. After that, level it with a level placed across the top, tighten all four lock nuts, and rock the washer corner to corner; if it rocks more in one direction, loosen the lock nut on the rocking foot, adjust it and retighten.

Read the LG code family

LG lists OE for a drain issue, IE for water supply, LE for motor overload, dE for a door lock, CE for overcurrent, FF for freezing, PF for power failure and PE for a pressure-sensor fault. The top-load code list also includes E6 for a clutch issue, LE1 for a blocked motor, dL for latch, tE for temperature sensor, PE for pressure sensor and FE for overfill. Use the code list for the washer’s type; front-load and top-load displays differ.

LG’s top-load guidance gives a water-pressure range of 14.5–116 PSI for the IE fill code. That is not a spin setting. If IE appears, use the model manual for the supply check rather than treating it as a motor error.

Some codes need a specific response. LG says a top-load LE1 or repeated error needs service. CE is cleared by unplugging for ten seconds; LE gets a 30-minute rest. If the same indication appears again, do not keep resetting it.

For the shared spin checks, use the washer not-spinning hub; for standing water, start with the washer not-draining hub. Keep the tub closed if a lock error appears; do not defeat the latch to investigate vibration.

When to call

Call when the drum does not move in LG’s test, a motor or door code returns, water remains after the drain check, or an object is trapped below the accessible area. Provide the model, exact code, load type and whether the washer is top-load or front-load. Do not open the cabinet to confirm a motor or clutch problem.

Frequently asked questions

What does UE mean on an LG washer?

LG uses UE for an unbalanced load. Redistribute laundry, check the washer's level and use the cycle recommended for bulky items.

How full should an LG washer be?

LG's UE guidance recommends a load around two-thirds of the drum. It also gives separate cycles for blankets and padded jackets.

What does OE mean on an LG washer?

OE points to a drain problem. Check the visible hose and follow the model manual before treating the issue as a spin-motor failure.

Can I reset an LG washer motor error?

LG says an LE motor-overload indication can need a 30-minute rest. If it returns, stop using the washer and contact LG service.
