For a GE washer that will not spin, first check whether it is still in a normal pause. GE also uses model-specific lid indications, balancing messages and cycle controls. A wet load does not automatically mean the drive system failed.
Wait through the pause and check the display
GE says pauses between cycle stages can last up to three minutes, and pumping water out can add time. Let the washer finish the stage before turning the dial or selecting another cycle. Advancing a control while a pause is in progress can interrupt the sequence.
On GE models from 2015 onward, a flashing SPIN light or a bALAnCing message can indicate an unbalanced load. Move the laundry so it is distributed around the basket, then restart the spin as the model directs. A compact washer may display dE or E2 when the lid is open; those indications flash for about 30 seconds and then the washer powers off.
For a dE or E2 lid indication, close the lid and press Start or Start/Pause. GE says a top-load washer will not spin with the lid raised. Do not hold the switch down or put a tool into the latch to make the washer run.
Causes, from a pause to service
1. A normal pause is still in progress
A normal pause is still in progress
The washer stopped between stages for a short time and the display does not show a recurring fault.

A GE washer can pause for up to three minutes between stages. Pump-out can add more time. If the display is not showing a recurring fault, wait for the pause to finish before changing the cycle.
Do not advance the dial during a normal pause. If the machine remains stopped after the pause ends, note which indicator is lit and move to the lid, power and load checks.
2. The lid is open or not registering as closed
The lid is open or not registering as closed
A compact GE model flashes dE or E2, or the top-load lid is visibly open.

No GE top-load washer spins while its lid is raised. On compact models, dE or E2 can indicate that the lid is open. Close it and press Start/Pause to resume.
Look for clothing caught at the lid edge. Do not bypass the lock. If the lid is closed but the indication returns, arrange service rather than opening the control area.
3. Power to the washer is interrupted
Power to the washer is interrupted
The washer is unresponsive or stopped during a power interruption.

- lamp or hair dryer
If the washer stopped or is unresponsive, GE says to check the outlet using a lamp or hair dryer. Use only an accessible outlet and keep the floor dry. Do not pull out a connected appliance to reach a plug.
If the breaker has tripped, a repeat trip is a stop signal. Leave the circuit off and call a qualified electrician or appliance technician. Do not remove the washer panel or test wiring.
4. The load is unbalanced or the washer is not level
The load is unbalanced or the washer is not level
SPIN flashes, bALAnCing appears or the washer shakes and stops during spin.

A flashing SPIN light or bALAnCing message on GE models from 2015 onward can point to an unbalanced load. Redistribute the clothes and check whether the basket is overloaded. GE says an overloaded load can make the washer shake and interrupt spinning.
To check a floor-mounted washer, press opposite corners to see whether it rocks. GE’s leveling direction is to turn the feet clockwise until they touch the floor, then turn the lock nuts counterclockwise. Use a level and do not tip a stacked washer; call an installer if it cannot be adjusted safely.
5. The Options knob is between settings
The Options control is between settings
A model with an Options knob is not aligned with a clear selection.

Some GE models have an Options knob. GE says a control between positions may prevent the cycle from starting or completing. Turn the knob to a clear selection shown on the panel.
Do not force a control that is stuck. If the knob turns freely but the washer still will not spin, note the selected cycle and contact GE support.
6. A canceled indication needs Drain & Spin
A canceled indication needs a drain-and-spin cycle
CAnCELEd or two indicator lights on the right side appear after an interrupted cycle.

CAnCELEd or two indicator lights on the right side can follow a canceled cycle. GE says to select Drain & Spin. If the indication remains, disconnect power for one minute, then restore it and choose the cycle again.
Use the reset only after noting the indication. If it returns after a single reset, call service rather than repeating power interruptions.
7. The motor runs but the basket does not spin
The motor runs but the basket does not spin
The washer pumps water and the motor runs, but the basket still does not turn.

GE says that when the washer pumps water and the motor runs but the basket does not turn, the washer needs service. A motor sound by itself is not a repair diagnosis; the technician must inspect the drive system.
GE HydroWave motors from 2011–2015 have a separate motor-reset procedure. Use the model-specific GE instructions for that sequence. If the basket still will not spin after the approved reset, stop and arrange service.
GE model clues that change the next check
The display can point to a specific model family. dE or E2 appears on compact models when the lid is open. SPIN flashing or bALAnCing applies to models from 2015 onward. An Options knob applies only to models with that control. Match the display and panel to your model before trying the corresponding step.
GE’s power check is an accessible outlet check with a lamp or hair dryer. Its leveling adjustment is also model-specific: turn feet clockwise until they contact the floor and lock nuts counterclockwise. If the washer is stacked, the feet are inaccessible or the floor is damaged, have an installer level it.
If the canceled indication appears, select Drain & Spin first. If the lights persist, GE says to disconnect power for one minute. A stopped washer with a closed lid and no power response needs a different check from a washer that is actively draining; record which one happened before calling.
Before resetting, distinguish whether the washer stopped during wash, after pump-out or in the spin stage. GE treats a normal pause, a lid code and CAnCELEd as separate conditions. On compact models with dE or E2, close the lid and press Start/Pause. For CAnCELEd or the two right-side lights, select Drain & Spin first; use the one-minute reset only if that indication persists.
| GE indication or control | Model clue | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| dE or E2 | Compact washer; lid is open | Close the lid and press Start/Pause. |
| SPIN flashes or bALAnCing appears | Washer model from 2015 onward | Redistribute the load and retry the spin. |
| Options knob is between positions | Model with rotary Options control | Turn to a clear selection. |
| CAnCELEd or two right-side lights | Cycle was canceled | Select Drain & Spin; if the indication persists, power off for one minute. |
Do not treat these display clues as interchangeable. The compact lid code points to closure, while the later-model balance display points to the load. A control-knob position is a setting issue. Match the message to the feature on your washer before resetting it.
A separate GE HydroWave motor reset
GE HydroWave motor models from 2011–2015 have a separate motor-reset procedure. The steps are not the same as selecting Drain & Spin or clearing CAnCELEd. Use the procedure for the exact model and stop if it does not restore spinning. If the washer pumps water and the motor runs while the basket remains still, GE says the machine needs service.
Power and leveling without opening the washer
To check an accessible outlet, GE says to plug in a lamp or hair dryer. Do not use an appliance cord as a substitute for repairing a loose or damaged outlet. If the test device also loses power or the breaker trips, stop and call an electrician.
For an unstacked machine that rocks, GE’s feet adjustment is specific: turn the feet clockwise until they touch the floor, then turn the lock nuts counterclockwise. Recheck the washer with a level. Do not adjust a stacked unit or lift a heavy washer alone; have an installer do that work.
Where spin and drain meet
The washer uses its drain path before the basket can complete a high-speed spin. The diagram labels the drum, lid switch, motor and pump for orientation. It does not show a repair procedure for any internal part.

If the tub still contains water, use the washer not-draining hub. The washer not-spinning hub covers the general load checks, and the GE washer drain guide explains GE’s model-specific pump and drain clues.
When to call
Call if the closed-lid code returns, the washer continues to shake after leveling and load checks, the breaker trips, or the motor runs while the basket remains still. Tell the technician the model type, display text, selected cycle and whether the pump ran. Do not open the cabinet or try a motor repair.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a GE washer pause before spinning?
GE says a pause can last up to three minutes, and the pump-out period can add more time. Wait for the stage to finish before restarting the control.
What does a flashing SPIN light mean on a GE washer?
On models from 2015 onward, GE says flashing SPIN or bALAnCing can indicate the load needs to rebalance. Redistribute the laundry and try again.
Will a GE washer spin with its lid open?
No. GE says a top-load washer will not spin while the lid is raised. Close the lid and press Start or Start/Pause as the model directs.
What if a GE washer drains but the basket will not spin?
GE says a washer that pumps water and runs its motor but does not spin needs service. Do not open the cabinet or replace an internal part based on that symptom alone.
