If your dryer will not start, check the Start control, door and cycle before assuming an internal switch failed. Whirlpool says some Start buttons need a two-to-five-second hold, and its door guidance says both latches must engage where the model has two. Keep the cabinet closed; a burnt cord or terminal block is professional work.

Check the controls first

Confirm the dryer is plugged in and the display is on. Choose a cycle that can start. Whirlpool says Wrinkle Reduction can prevent a cycle from beginning on the covered models. Its Controls Locked setting can be released by holding Cycle Signal for three seconds. Use the labels and instructions for your model.

Press Start as the manufacturer directs. Whirlpool says to hold Start or Push to Start for two to five seconds. A touch screen should be pressed with a dry fingertip. GE says to press START fully after choosing the temperature, fabric and time. If the dryer remains silent, check the door and displayed settings.

Close the door normally and check for clothes caught at the opening. On models with two latches, Whirlpool says both must be engaged. Do not push on a switch or try to trick the dryer into running with its door open.

If the dryer starts but stops before the drum turns, or the drum turns but clothes remain damp, compare the dryer not-heating hub and dryer warm-but-not-hot guide. If a Samsung display code appears, record it and compare it with Samsung’s code information for the exact model.

Causes, from controls to service

1. Start was not held long enough

Start was not held long enough

The display is ready but the cycle does not begin after a short tap.

Some Whirlpool controls require a deliberate hold. Whirlpool says Start or Push to Start should be held for two to five seconds. GE says its START control should be pressed fully. A quick tap may not register as a start command.

Choose the intended cycle and press the marked control once. Do not repeat rapidly or hold buttons that are not identified in the model manual.

2. The door is not latched

The door is open or not latched

Clothing is caught at the opening or a door indicator remains on.

A dryer will not run if the door is open. Check for clothing caught at the opening and close the door normally. Whirlpool says both latches must engage on covered models that have two.

If the door appears closed but the indicator remains, stop. Do not pry the latch or remove the door switch. Ask a technician to inspect it.

3. A household breaker or fuse may have tripped

A household breaker or fuse may have tripped

The panel is blank or the external breaker position appears changed.

Whirlpool lists household fuses and breakers among its no-operation checks. Electric dryers may use two circuits; the drum and heater can behave differently if one circuit trips. A gas dryer has a different electrical load, but a tripped household circuit can still affect operation.

Do not open the panel or touch wiring. If a visible breaker position has changed, or the breaker trips again, stop and call an electrician. Do not keep resetting it.

4. Wrinkle Reduction or Controls Locked is active

Wrinkle Reduction or Controls Locked prevents starting

Wrinkle Reduction or a control-lock indicator is selected.

Whirlpool says Wrinkle Reduction can prevent a start on the covered models. It also identifies Controls Locked and gives a three-second Cycle Signal hold to release that setting.

Use the control labels or manual for your exact model. If the setting is off but the dryer still does not start, check the door and error display.

5. A GE personality setting needs selection

A GE personality setting needs selection

A GE model from 2019 or later displays 1 or 2 during setup.

GE says models from 2019 onward can display 1 or 2 to ask for a dryer type selection. Its instructions use 1 for electric and 2 for gas, followed by START.

Use this only if the model and display match GE’s instructions. Do not infer the selection on another brand or a different GE model.

6. The power cord or terminal block is damaged

The power cord or terminal block needs inspection

A professional finds a damaged cord, burned wire or loose terminal.

GE says a damaged wire at an electric dryer’s terminal block needs professional replacement. LG also lists cord and supply conditions in its no-power guidance. A dryer can be hazardous even if its panel is dark.

Do not remove the terminal cover, tighten screws or touch the cord connection. Have a licensed electrician or appliance technician inspect it.

7. The door switch may be damaged

A door switch may be damaged

The dryer will not recognize a closed door and the switch appears damaged or burned.

GE lists a door switch that is burned or pushed in among possible causes when its dryer will not start. A switch is inside the appliance and cannot be safely inspected from the front.

Do not press, bypass or replace it yourself. If the dryer does not recognize a normally closed door, request professional service.

Model-specific checks matter

Whirlpool distinguishes its cycle controls, door latches and control lock. GE gives a separate selection for models from 2019 onward when the display asks whether the dryer is electric or gas. LG says a lit drum lamp with no start can still mean repair is needed, and its page lists power-failure indications. These instructions do not transfer across brands.

For a GE or Whirlpool electric dryer, do not inspect the cord or terminal block. GE says burned or broken wires require replacing the damaged parts through a professional. Whirlpool says to call an electrician if the listed checks do not restore operation. A touch panel or dark screen is not permission to open the machine.

Stop and call a pro

Stop if a cord is hot or damaged, if there is a burnt smell, if a breaker will not stay on, or if the door switch does not register a closed door. Do not work on the terminal block or access live wiring. Tell service the model number, selected cycle, display message and whether the door latches normally.

Compare the controls by manufacturer

Whirlpool says its Start or Push to Start control may need a two-to-five-second hold. A touch panel should be pressed with a dry fingertip. The door must latch fully; some covered models have two latches. Whirlpool also says Wrinkle Reduction can prevent a cycle from starting and that its listed Controls Locked procedure holds Cycle Signal for three seconds.

On a GE dryer from 2019 onward, the display may ask for a type selection. GE says 1 is electric and 2 is gas. Choose only the setting that matches the dryer label. The display prompt is a model-setting clue, not an instruction to inspect the supply wiring.

LG separates a no-power symptom from an internal start failure. Its guidance says a lit drum with a dryer that will not run needs repair. Check only that the power cord is firmly seated and that the external breaker has not tripped; if the unit remains unresponsive, call for service. PF and nP messages point to separate power conditions in LG’s information. Do not open a terminal block or test a 240-volt outlet.

Write down the model number, the exact display message, whether the drum light comes on, and the selected cycle. That gives a technician the clues needed to distinguish a control setting, lost power and an internal switch without asking you to open the cabinet.

LG lists a wall switch that controls the outlet as another visible power check. Its instructions also say to check the cord’s seating and describe a five-second breaker reset for the listed models. If the drum light is on but the dryer still will not run, LG directs the owner to repair service. Do not repeat resets when the breaker trips again or when the cord, outlet or control looks damaged.

Whirlpool distinguishes electric models with two breakers or fuses from gas models with one. Record whether the dryer is electric or gas before describing a power problem to a technician. That distinction does not authorize opening a panel or moving a gas-connected dryer. Leave a recurring power loss, burnt switch or damaged cord to qualified service.

GE lists a door switch that is burnt or pushed inward as a possible no-start cause. Do not press, pry or test the switch through the door opening. A switch that does not register a closed door needs internal diagnosis by a technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Whirlpool dryer start only when I hold the button?

Whirlpool says the Start or Push to Start control may need a two-to-five-second hold. Use a dry fingertip for a touch control.

What does 1 or 2 mean on a newer GE dryer?

GE says models from 2019 onward can ask for a type selection: 1 for electric and 2 for gas. Follow the matching model’s instructions.

Can I replace a dryer door switch?

This guide does not describe an internal switch replacement. GE lists a damaged door switch as a service cause. Keep the cabinet closed and contact a technician.
