If your dryer drum will not turn, check the load, door and control display before assuming the belt or motor failed. GE says a heavy wet load can make a belt slip. Samsung’s 3C code points to a motor error and calls for service if it returns. Internal parts stay behind the cabinet.
Check the load and controls
If the drum stopped while carrying a heavy wet load, wait until it stops and the door unlocks normally. Remove some items and try a smaller load only if there is no burning smell, error or other sign of a fault. GE says an overloaded wet load can make a belt slip. Do not force the door open or reach toward a moving drum.
Check the control display for Child Lock or a code. LG says to check the error indication before trying to restart; it lists Child Lock as a possible reason the dryer does not run. For Samsung, 3C is a motor error. Turn the dryer off for two to three minutes, turn it back on and restart the cycle as Samsung directs; if 3C returns, arrange service.
Make sure the door is fully closed. A door latch that does not engage can keep the cycle from starting. Do not pry the latch or remove a door switch. If the controls are clear but the drum remains still, stop and request a diagnosis.
The dryer won’t-start guide covers the door and control checks. For a no-heat complaint with the drum turning, see the dryer not-heating hub. If a drum starts and then stops, return to the visible control checks before arranging service.
Causes, from load to professional diagnosis
1. A heavy wet load is straining the drive
A heavy wet load may make the belt slip
A heavy load stopped the drum and the dryer runs again when emptied.

GE says a heavy wet load can make the belt slip. A bulky item saturated with water can place a different load on the drum than ordinary laundry.
Wait for the drum to stop and unload only when the door opens normally. If the dryer starts with a smaller load, use the model’s capacity guidance. If it remains still, do not keep restarting it; a technician should inspect the drive.
2. The belt may be loose or broken

GE says to unplug the dryer, remove laundry and check whether the drum turns freely. If it does, the belt may be broken or loose, and GE directs the owner to service. Do not remove panels or try to pull the belt into place.

LG says Child Lock can prevent a dryer from running. Its model instructions use a three-second button hold for the lock. The control sequence varies by model, so use the button label or owner’s manual.
Do not use a sequence from a different model. If the lock clears but the drum still will not start, check the door and any displayed code.
4. The door is not latched
The door is not latched
The door is visibly open or a door warning appears.

A dryer will not begin a cycle if the door does not close. Remove clothing caught at the opening and close the door normally. Do not slam or pry it.
If the door appears closed but the warning remains, a latch or door switch may need inspection. Keep the cabinet closed and request service.

Samsung lists 3C as a motor error. It says to turn the dryer off for two to three minutes, turn it on and restart the cycle. If the code returns, the appliance needs service.

A free drum check has limits
GE describes a drum movement check only after unplugging the dryer and removing its load. If the drum turns freely, GE says the belt may be loose or broken and sends the owner to service. This observation does not identify a tensioner, pulley or motor fault. Do not open the appliance to look for those parts.
Samsung’s 3C code also does not identify the exact motor component. Its instructions give a short restart and say to contact service if the error returns. Do not substitute a motor or belt based on the code alone.
Reading the symptom: what the drum and motor are telling you
The manufacturer pages above stop where the cabinet opens. A secondary repair reference, iFixit’s wiki page on dryers that will not spin, goes further, and it is useful for one purpose: understanding what a technician is likely to check, so you can describe the problem precisely and judge a quote. It is a repair-community source, not a manufacturer, and it is written for people who open the cabinet. This guide does not tell you to do that. The points below are the observations that need no tools.
Does anything happen when you press start? iFixit lists a failed door switch and a failed start switch as the first suspects for a dryer that does nothing. It says to press the door switch and listen for a click. You can do that part with the door open and nothing else touched, but testing the switch itself requires unplugging the dryer and a meter, which belongs with a technician. iFixit also notes that some dryers show no response at all with a broken belt, because a belt switch disables the unit. That means “completely dead” does not rule out a belt. If you see no lights and hear nothing, compare notes with the dryer won’t-start guide before concluding the drive has failed.
Does the motor hum but the drum stays still? iFixit says a jammed blower can make the motor hum while it tries to turn, and that lint or fallen laundry such as socks can be the cause. A hum is also what you would hear from a belt that has slipped off. Do not keep restarting the dryer; repeated attempts with a stalled motor are the sort of thing the manufacturer pages warn against. Tell the technician you heard a hum and whether it stopped after a few seconds.
With the dryer unplugged and empty, does the drum spin by hand? GE describes this check, and iFixit explains why it is informative. A drum that spins very easily suggests a broken belt. A drum that will not turn, or turns with difficulty, points toward a worn bearing, a failed roller or a clogged blower, according to iFixit. These are different repairs with different prices, so the difference is worth telling the technician before they arrive. Do not force a stuck drum and do not reach for the belt.
Does it start and then stop? iFixit lists a blown thermal fuse or cutout among the causes of a dryer that stops, and ties a blown fuse to blocked exhaust ducts. It also says an overheating motor can cause mid-cycle stops. If the vent has been poor, see how to clean a dryer vent and tell the technician about it. Do not test the fuse yourself.
What the repair list looks like
For context, iFixit’s page lists these as the possible faults, from the cheapest to diagnose to the last resort: door switch, start switch, drive belt, thermal fuse or cutout, loose belt tension, blower jam, worn drum bearing, failed drum rollers, belt switch, motor bearings, timer, motor and main control board. It describes the control board and motor as a last resort. A quote that begins with the motor or board before the belt, switches and blower have been checked deserves a question about how the technician ruled out the simpler items.
Two practical details come from the same page. It says to photograph the belt routing before removing a belt, and that belt ribs face the drum. Both matter only to a repair professional or a confident DIYer working on the model’s tech sheet, but they are why a belt job quote should be modest compared with a motor job. Use the cost ranges in this guide as planning figures only.
Questions worth asking the technician
- Did the drum turn freely by hand once the belt was off, and what did you find?
- Was the blower clear of lint and laundry?
- Is the quote for the belt alone, or for the belt and idler pulley?
- If a motor is quoted, what test led to it?
Stop and call a pro
Stop if the drum remains still after the load and door checks, if the belt may be loose, or if 3C returns. Do not remove panels, touch a motor or inspect wiring. Give the technician the model number, displayed code, load type and whether the empty drum moved freely after unplugging.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my dryer drum turn freely by hand?
GE says that if the unplugged drum turns freely, the belt may be loose or broken and service is needed. Do not open the cabinet to confirm it.
What does 3C mean on a Samsung dryer?
Samsung identifies 3C as a motor error. It says to turn the dryer off for two to three minutes, turn it on and restart; if the code returns, arrange service.
Can a heavy load stop a dryer drum?
GE says a heavy wet load can make the belt slip. Remove the load only after the drum stops and the door opens normally.
