When a washer will not spin or drain, check the cycle and display before suspecting two failed parts. Some LG models do not drain or spin if only a wash cycle was selected. Whirlpool, GE and Samsung also point to lid, suds, hose and load conditions that can interrupt both phases.
Separate a shared failure from two symptoms
Read the display before resetting the washer. A door code points to a lid or lock check. Ub or UE on Samsung points to an unbalanced load. Samsung’s 5C family points to drainage. Whirlpool’s Sud or Sd points to excess suds. The exact code helps distinguish a cycle interruption from a drain restriction.
Check the selected cycle. LG says some models will not spin or drain if only a wash cycle was chosen. Its sequence is Power, Spin, then Start. Some LG Six Motion models drain automatically after washing. A small amount of water can remain because laundry absorbs moisture, so look for whether the tub is actually full rather than assuming every damp load failed to drain.
GE says pauses can last three minutes and pump-out can add more time. Wait for the normal pause to end. If the washer is full and only hums, or if it pumps out and the motor runs but the tub does not spin, GE says to arrange service.
Check whether the tub is truly full after the cycle or whether the laundry simply feels damp. LG notes that some moisture can remain because the clothes absorb water. A visible pool left in the tub points to a drain problem; wet clothing in an otherwise empty tub points more toward cycle selection, load balance or spin speed.
Causes, from cycle selection to service
1. The lid or door is not closed and locked
The lid or door is not closed and locked
A lid or door code appears, or clothing is caught at the opening.

Whirlpool and GE both identify lid or door closure as a condition for spinning. Check that no clothing is caught at the opening and close the lid or door normally. Samsung door codes also indicate that the door is not detected as closed and locked.
Do not bypass the lock. If the lid is closed but the code returns, call service. A lock fault can prevent the machine from entering spin even when the drain hose is clear.
2. A wash-only cycle was selected
A wash-only cycle was selected
The washer completed a wash phase but no spin or drain phase was selected.

LG says some of its models will not drain or spin when a wash-only cycle is selected. Press Power, select Spin, then press Start as LG describes. For models that require Rinse & Spin, use the control option listed in the manual.
Some LG Six Motion models drain automatically after the wash phase. Check whether the cycle is still running before restarting it. A little moisture left in laundry is not the same as a full tub that did not drain.
3. Excess suds are slowing both phases
Excess suds are slowing drainage and spin
Foam remains in the tub or a Samsung suds code appears.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 5 minutes
- Tools

Whirlpool says excess suds can slow the washer. Samsung’s SUd-family codes indicate foam and a pause while the machine clears it. Use HE detergent where the model requires it and follow the detergent label.
Do not add another detergent dose while foam remains. Let the washer complete the rinse. If the code returns without visible suds, record the display and arrange support.
4. The drain hose or household drain is restricted
The drain hose or household drain is restricted
The exposed hose is kinked or water backs up at the standpipe.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time
- 10 minutes

Check the exposed hose for a sharp bend and look for water backing up at the standpipe. Whirlpool gives a 4.5-inch insertion limit for its drain hose; use its U-shaped hose guide and do not tape over the drain opening.
Do not pull out a built-in or stacked washer to reach a hidden connection. The washer not-draining hub covers the visible hose, standpipe and household drain checks.
5. A front-load pump filter is blocked
A front-load pump filter is blocked
The washer has an owner-accessible front-load filter identified in its manual.

- Moderate
- Time
- 20 minutes
- Tools
- towel, shallow container
Only some front-load washers have an owner-accessible pump filter. Check the model manual to confirm the filter and cleaning steps. Have a towel and shallow container ready only if the manual describes water release from that access door.
Do not open a panel or force a filter door. If the model has no owner-accessible filter, skip this check. A blocked filter can affect drainage, but it does not explain every no-spin symptom.
6. The load is unbalanced
The load is unbalanced
The display shows Ub or UE, or the load is bunched to one side.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 5 minutes

Samsung lists Ub and UE as unbalance indications. Redistribute the clothing so the load is not gathered on one side. Whirlpool and GE also identify unbalanced or overloaded loads as reasons a spin can stop.
After the load is rearranged, close the lid or door and restart the spin according to the model. If the same code repeats with different balanced loads, do not keep adding cycles; record it and call service.
7. The pump or motor needs professional diagnosis

If the tub remains full after the safe hose and cycle checks, or the washer drains but the motor cannot turn the basket, an internal fault needs diagnosis. GE says a full tub that only hums and a washer that pumps out but will not spin need service.
$300–$400Source: Washing Machine Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026 This Fixr range is for planning. It does not confirm that the pump failed. Do not open the pump or motor area; ask a technician to identify the fault.
What the codes say across brands
Samsung nd, 5E and 5C indicate a drain problem; Ub and UE indicate imbalance; dE relates to a door that is not locked. GE’s compact dE or E2 indications point to an open lid. Whirlpool Sud or Sd points to excess suds. Keep each code tied to its manufacturer and model family.
| Brand and display | What it signals | First safe direction |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung nd, 5E or 5C | Drain problem | Check the visible drain route. |
| Samsung Ub or UE | Unbalanced load | Redistribute the laundry. |
| Samsung dE | Door not detected as locked | Check the latch area and close the door. |
| GE dE or E2 on compact models | Lid open | Close the lid and press Start/Pause. |
| Whirlpool Sud or Sd | Excess suds | Use HE detergent and let the rinse finish. |
Do not borrow a code meaning across brands. The same letters can mean different things on different control systems. Record the brand, model and exact display before clearing it.
If the washer is full and humming, stop the cycle and arrange service. If it drains but does not spin while the motor runs, GE also directs owners to service. Do not treat a drain code as a motor code or replace the pump based only on standing water.
The two symptoms can also have separate causes at once. A hose restriction may leave water behind, while an unbalanced load prevents a full spin. Check the order: first determine whether the tub emptied, then look at the load and lid before restarting. If both symptoms return after the safe checks, a technician can test the pump and drive system without relying on guesswork.
Record what happened in one cycle
Before another attempt, note the selected cycle, whether the lid or door locked, any code, whether the pump ran and how much water remained before spin. A short GE pause can be normal; a full tub that hums needs service. A Samsung balance code calls for a load check, while a 5C-family code calls for a drain check. These observations let a technician separate the cycle control, load and drain path without asking you to open the machine.
| What you observe | Check first |
|---|---|
| Tub is empty, clothes are wet | Cycle selection, spin setting and load balance. |
| Tub is full after the cycle | Visible hose route and model-approved front-load filter. |
| Door or lid code appears | Clothing at the opening and normal latch closure. |
| Brief pause before pump-out | Wait for the model’s normal pause to finish. |
Do not run repeated cycles just to reproduce the fault if the tub is full, the washer is humming or water is on the floor. Stop and call for service when those conditions persist.
Trace the shared drain and spin path
The drum must be able to drain before a high-speed spin can finish. The diagram labels the door, drum, pump filter, hose and standpipe discussed in the checks above. It is a generic reference, not a service drawing.

For a spin-only complaint, see the washer not-spinning hub. If your machine is a GE, the GE washer drain guide covers its pause and filter clues. Use the Whirlpool washer drain guide for that brand’s separate standpipe measurements.
When to call
Call if the lid or door code returns, the washer stays full and hums, the motor runs but the drum does not turn, or the same drain code returns after the visible checks. Give the technician the exact display, selected cycle, whether the tub was full and whether the washer pumped water out. That separates a stopped cycle from a confirmed drain or drive fault.
For a washer-dryer combo that washes but will not dry, see the combo not-drying guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can the wrong cycle keep a washer from spinning and draining?
Yes. LG says some models will not drain or spin when only a wash cycle is selected. Use the model's Spin or Rinse & Spin option as its control guide shows.
Why does my washer drain but not spin?
GE says a washer that pumps water and runs its motor but does not spin needs service. A lid, load or selected cycle can also stop the spin before that point.
Can too much detergent stop a washer from draining?
Yes. Whirlpool says excess suds can slow the cycle. Use HE detergent where required and let the washer complete its rinse.
What do Ub and UE mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung lists Ub and UE as unbalance indications. Redistribute the load; a Samsung 5C-family code instead points to a drain problem.
