For a Maytag washer that will not spin, check the load, lid and selected spin setting before looking for a failed part. An overloaded basket, pause or power interruption can leave clothing wet even when the motor does not need repair.

Check the load and controls first

Look for clothing bunched on one side or a basket packed too tightly. Maytag lists an overloaded or unbalanced load among common reasons a washer may not spin. Redistribute the clothes and restart the cycle as the model directs.

Check whether the washer is paused. Maytag’s Late Add feature lets you press Start to pause and add laundry. The Add Garment light indicates that the washer is paused on models with that feature. Close the door and resume the cycle when the display allows it.

If power was interrupted during spin, Maytag says to select Spin or Drain and Spin to continue. Use the setting shown on the control panel and check the manual if the model uses different wording. Do not open the cabinet to resume a cycle manually.

Causes, from load setup to service

1. The load is overloaded or unbalanced

The load is overloaded or unbalanced

The basket is tightly packed, clothing is bunched or the washer shakes as spin begins.

A tightly packed basket or laundry gathered on one side can interfere with spinning. Remove some items if the load is too full and distribute the remaining clothing evenly.

Maytag also lists an unbalanced load as a cause. If the washer still stops with a smaller, balanced load, check the selected cycle and whether the machine is level.

2. The washer is not level

The washer is not level

The washer rocks or moves during spin.

level

A washer that rocks can become unbalanced as the basket accelerates. Maytag says to level the washer using its feet. Use the model manual to identify the adjustment points and check that the appliance is stable.

Do not tip or lift a washer alone. If it is stacked, too heavy to move safely or sits on an uneven floor, ask an installer to level it.

3. The lid or door is not fully closed

The lid or door is not fully closed

The lid or door is open, or the Add Garment light shows that the washer is paused.

Difficulty
Easy
Time
3 minutes

Maytag says a washer will not spin unless the lid or door is securely closed. Check for a garment caught at the opening, close it normally and look at the Add Garment indicator if your model has one.

Late Add pauses the cycle so laundry can be added. Close the door and press Start to resume. Do not bypass the lock or press a switch manually.

4. Power was interrupted during spin

Power was interrupted during spin

The washer stopped after a power interruption and the cycle has not resumed.

If the washer lost power during the spin phase, Maytag says to select Spin or Drain and Spin to continue. Use the option available on your control panel.

If the outlet has no power or the breaker trips again, stop. Do not remove the access panel to test the supply. Arrange service if power returns but the washer stops again.

5. A low spin setting was selected

A low spin speed or cycle was selected

A low-spin cycle is selected and clothing remains wetter than expected.

Maytag lists a low spin speed as a reason clothing can remain wet. Check the selected cycle and spin option. Choose a setting that fits the fabric and load using the model guide.

Extra Power is a Maytag option that adds a prewash and extra agitation on models with the feature. It changes the wash action; it should not be confused with a repair for a spin problem.

6. Excess suds or a paused cycle delayed the spin

Excess suds or a paused cycle delayed the spin

Foam is visible or the washer is paused before the spin phase.

Maytag lists excess suds and a paused cycle among causes of a no-spin complaint. Use HE detergent and follow its label. Do not add more detergent while foam remains in the tub.

If the Add Garment light is on, the washer may be paused for Late Add. Close the door and resume. If the cycle is not paused and the load is balanced but spinning still does not begin, arrange service.

Drain-side checks Maytag lists for a washer that will not spin

Maytag’s product-help guide covers spinning and draining together, because a washer that cannot empty its tub will not spin. Beyond the load, lid and suds checks above, it names two things on the drain side. The first is the drain hose: check it for kinks or clogs, straighten it, and clear any blockage in the hose, the drainpipe or the utility sink. Maytag says to use the U-shaped hose guide and secure the hose as the installation instructions show.

The second is the standpipe. Maytag gives a range of 30 inches minimum to 96 inches maximum for the standpipe height, and says that above 96 inches the washer cannot pump adequately and water may flow back into it. If you cannot tell how high the drain connection sits, that is a question for the installer, not a reason to move the hose yourself. On some front-load models Maytag also notes a drain pump filter that owners can reach; lint, dirt or other debris can clog it, so Maytag says to clean it occasionally. Whether your model has an owner-accessible filter depends on the model manual.

Maytag’s page also explains why gentle settings leave clothes wet. Gentle, delicate and handwash cycles spin slowly and leave more water in the clothes. If wet clothes are the whole complaint, choose a high-spin cycle such as heavy duty or super, and follow the care label on the garment. That is a setting, not a fault.

Out-of-balance behavior and the Ofb code

On top-load HE models with electronic controls, Maytag describes what the washer does when the load is off balance. It adds water and tries to redistribute the clothes, which may make the cycle longer. If it cannot correct the imbalance, it displays an Ofb code and the cycle appears complete, with clothes that can still be wet. Maytag’s vibration page says that if you hear banging, you should open the lid and redistribute the load, and that the washer must be level because an unlevel washer can make the load unbalanced, especially during the spin.

That makes the order of checks simple. Redistribute the load, confirm the washer is level, and run the spin again before treating a wet load as a drive failure. If the washer runs a long cycle or the clothes stay wet after that, Maytag directs owners to its not-spinning troubleshooting and, if the problem persists, to contact Maytag or schedule service through its preferred service providers. Do not open the cabinet to look at the drive parts yourself.

What the Maytag options do

Maytag’s Extra Power option adds a prewash and extra agitation on models that include it. Late Add pauses the cycle when Start is pressed so items can be added. The Add Garment light shows that pause on supported models. These features change the selected cycle or its state; they are not evidence that a belt, pump or motor has failed.

Use HE detergent as Maytag directs. Excess suds can interfere with the cycle, while a low spin setting can leave more moisture in clothing. If the washer stopped after a power interruption, choose Spin or Drain and Spin rather than restarting an unrelated wash cycle.

Match what you see to Maytag’s listed cause

What you see Cause Maytag lists First owner action
Clothes soaked, Add Garment light on Cycle paused for Late Add Close the lid or door and resume the cycle
Clothes damp after a gentle or handwash cycle Slow spin setting Choose a high-spin cycle if the care label allows
Banging, then Ofb on the display Load could not be balanced Redistribute the load and check that the washer is level
Water still in the tub Drain hose, standpipe or suds Check the hose for kinks and the detergent amount
Washer will not run at all Lid or door not fully shut Close and latch it before changing anything else
Power was interrupted mid-spin Cycle stopped partway Select Spin or Drain and Spin to continue

If none of those rows describes the washer, the next step is Maytag’s service line, not the cabinet screws.

When to call

Call if the lid is closed, the load is balanced, the washer is level and the selected spin option is correct but the basket still does not turn. Tell the technician whether the washer paused for Late Add, lost power or showed visible suds. Do not replace an internal part until the cause has been diagnosed.

Frequently asked questions

Can too much laundry stop a Maytag washer from spinning?

Yes. Maytag lists an overloaded or unbalanced load among reasons a washer may not spin. Redistribute the laundry and avoid packing the basket tightly.

What detergent should I use in a Maytag washer?

Maytag says to use HE detergent. Follow the label and your model's instructions to avoid excess suds.

What does the Add Garment light mean?

On Maytag models with this feature, the light indicates the washer is paused so clothing can be added. Close the door and resume as the model directs.
