If your Samsung is not keeping food cold, work through Samsung’s own order of checks here, then fall back to the general refrigerator not-cooling hub for clues that are not brand-specific. Samsung’s US cooling page splits the problem into four situations: not cold enough, not cooling at all, food freezing and soft ice cream. Which one you are in decides the first step. The Samsung ice-maker guide covers the separate ice-production symptom.
Which of Samsung’s four situations are you in?
Samsung’s US page organizes its advice by what you actually see, and the first step differs for each. Read the one that matches before you start resetting things.
A. The fridge, freezer or FlexZone is not cold enough
Samsung begins with the display. If a code appears, use the error-code guide for that model. If no code appears, unplug the refrigerator or turn it off at the breaker for two minutes, then restore power. Its self-test will show a code if it finds a fault.
Then comes patience. Samsung says the display can take up to four hours to show a new temperature setting, and the refrigerator can take up to 28 hours to reach it with the doors closed. A blinking display means a compartment is too warm, and some models chime. If it is still blinking 28 hours after you changed the setting, Samsung says to request service. Judge your food by touching the containers rather than by the air in the compartment, since air warms quickly when a door opens, and use FoodSafety.gov’s storage chart for safe temperatures.
The rest of Samsung’s list is about what lets heat in or keeps cold air from moving:
- Leave two inches of clearance at the back, top and sides, and keep food two inches from the interior vents.
- Keep the refrigerator at least two-thirds full and organized so the doors stay open less.
- Lower the temperature setting, and use Power Cool or Power Freeze when you need more cooling. FlexZone settings vary by design.
- Keep the refrigerator in a climate-controlled spot away from sunlight and from heat sources such as an oven. Samsung says rooms below 55°F make it work harder and reduce cooling.
- Let hot food reach room temperature before refrigerating it, because hot food warms the whole compartment.
- Clean the door seals monthly with a damp cloth and dish soap. Frost or condensation near the seal suggests a leak.
B. Nothing is cooling at all
For a refrigerator or freezer that is not cooling at all, Samsung’s steps run in a different order. First confirm power: the interior lights should come on when you open the door unless Sabbath mode is active, and the panel should light. Then turn off Cooling Off Mode, also called Demo or Shop mode. The display shows OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF or scrolling bars, and the refrigerator will not cool in this mode. The steps to disable it vary by panel type. On top-freezer models, Samsung adds that no compartment should be set to Off, which disables cooling for that compartment.
Next comes the paper test on the door seals. Clean the seal with dish soap and a damp cloth if it fails, and request service if it still fails. An unlevel unit can fail the test because the doors are misaligned. Finally, power cycle the refrigerator for two minutes and wait: Samsung says to wait three hours, or two hours if Power Cool is on, then verify the temperature settings. If cooling has not returned after two hours, request service.
Samsung’s page gives conflicting waiting times here: 28 hours in section A for a temperature change, and two to three hours in section B for a full restart with no cooling. The page does not reconcile them. A practical reading is that 28 hours applies to reaching a new setpoint from a working state, and the shorter window to a refrigerator that was not cooling at all. If you see no improvement within three hours of a restart, treat that as the cue to call service.
C. Food is freezing in the fresh-food compartment
This is the opposite problem, and Samsung treats it separately. Turn off Power Cool: on panel models hold the Fridge button for three seconds until its light turns off, and on Family Hub models use the Fridge Manager app. Clear any ice or frost from the back-wall vents, because blocked vents cause overcooling. Keep two inches of clearance and store high-water foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables in their drawers rather than near the vents. Samsung also says the room should stay between 50°F and 110°F, and that outside that range the refrigerator will not cool properly. If food still freezes, request service.
D. Ice cream is soft in the freezer
Samsung’s tip is to keep ice cream away from the door, where warm air enters each time it opens, and to keep the freezer below 3°F, since most ice cream softens at 3°F or higher. Other foods should stay at 0°F or below. Samsung’s default is -2°F and it cites the International Dairy Foods Association’s recommendation of -5°F to 0°F. If the freezer still runs warm, go back to section A.
What Samsung’s UK and Philippine pages add
Samsung’s UK page adds a check that the US page lacks. It says dust and debris on the compressor and fan make the fridge work harder. Its steps are to unplug the refrigerator first, remove the rear access panel at the bottom of the unit, use a vacuum with a brush or crevice attachment and a soft brush for tight spots, wipe the area with a dry microfiber cloth and check that the fan blades spin freely, then refit the panel and plug the refrigerator back in. It suggests repeating this every six months, or more often in homes with pets. The page warns to unplug the refrigerator before cleaning inside the compressor compartment. This is a regional page, and the access panel and its location vary by model, so use the manual and stop if the panel is not clearly a user-removable one.
The UK page also says to give the unit up to 24 hours to stabilize after cleaning the gasket, and that cracked or worn seals should be replaced by a technician, not repaired at home. Its Demo Mode description matches the US one: the mode turns off cooling while the lights and display stay on, and the display may read “OF-OF”. It gives a button combination for a particular model, which varies, so use your manual.
The Philippine page is shorter and agrees with the US page on the main points: confirm power by plugging another device into the outlet and checking the breaker, make sure the door closes fully, set a low temperature and avoid warm spots such as direct sunlight, keep two inches of clearance and the refrigerator at least two-thirds full, and check for Demo Mode when the display shows “OFF” or “OF-OF”. It says Demo Mode disables the compressor to save electricity.
A sensible order to work through
- Read the display for a code or an OF OF indicator.
- Confirm power at the outlet and the breaker.
- Do the door seal test and clean the seal.
- Check clearance, vents and how full the refrigerator is.
- Check the room temperature and sunlight.
- Power cycle for two minutes, then wait the stated period.
- Call Samsung if the compartment is still warm, with the model number and any code.
Reset and waiting times differ by manufacturer, so do not carry Samsung’s numbers over to another brand. If you also look after a GE or Whirlpool refrigerator, use that brand’s page for its own steps.
The causes in detail
1. Cooling Off Mode is active
Cooling Off Mode is active
The display shows OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF or moving temperature bars.

Samsung lists OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF and moving temperature bars as signs of Cooling Off Mode. The lights and display can work even though the cooling system is disabled. Check the exact characters before changing settings.
The sequence to exit demo mode varies by panel. Use the manual or Samsung’s instructions for the refrigerator model; do not copy a sequence from a different screen.
2. Power Cool affects food temperature
Power Cool is affecting the fresh-food section
Food freezes after a rapid-cooling setting was used.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 5 minutes

Samsung’s page discusses Power Cool and food freezing in the fresh-food compartment. If food became too cold after rapid cooling, use the page’s model instructions to switch that function off and clear frost from rear vents.
Do not treat this setting as a cause when the display shows a code or both sections remain warm. Those symptoms need separate checks.
3. The door seal leaks air
The door seal leaks air
A dollar-bill check slips freely or there is moisture near the gasket.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 10 minutes

- dollar bill, damp cloth
Samsung suggests a dollar-bill check for the door gasket. Slight resistance is a good sign; if the bill slips freely, clean the seal and repeat. A misaligned door can create a false failure, so check that the door closes evenly.
Samsung recommends cleaning the gasket monthly with a damp cloth and soap. Do not stretch or remove it. Arrange service if the seal is torn or the door will not align.
4. Clearance or food placement restricts airflow
Clearance or food placement restricts airflow
The refrigerator is close to the wall or food touches a rear vent.

Samsung says to leave two inches around the rear, top and sides and between food and air vents. Check the visible spacing without moving a connected refrigerator. Do not use the clearance from a different manufacturer’s manual.
Keep food away from rear outlets and avoid placing the unit next to an oven or in direct sun. If the appliance is built in, have an installer check the required clearance.
5. The room is outside the operating range
The room is outside the operating range
The room is below 55°F or outside the model's recommended range.

Samsung says a room below 55°F can make the refrigerator work harder. Its page also lists other room conditions that affect cooling. Compare the actual space with the manual for your model.
Do not assume a cold garage is suitable. Ask an installer before relocating a connected refrigerator.

Samsung describes a two-minute power reset. It says the panel may take up to four hours to show temperature and the refrigerator may take up to 28 hours to reach it. Its page also gives a shorter service timing elsewhere, so the wait instructions do not fully align.
Record the reset time, selected settings and display. Avoid repeatedly disconnecting power while the unit recovers.
