For a Whirlpool washer that will not spin, first check the lid, cycle choice and load. A wet load does not prove the belt or clutch failed. Whirlpool lists settings, imbalance, suds and drain conditions before it recommends service.
Check the lid and cycle before parts
Whirlpool says a top-load washer spins only when the lid is securely closed. Check that clothing or an object is not caught at the lid. The selector must also be set to a cycle; on models with a flashing Lid Lock light, press and hold Start for up to three seconds as Whirlpool describes. Do not bypass the lid lock or press it with a tool.
Look at the selected spin speed. Whirlpool’s front-load guidance says Low or No Spin can leave items wetter, and Delicate or Hand Wash cycles use a slower spin. A low-speed cycle is not the same as a failed spin system. Choose a cycle that matches the load and care label.
Check the load next. Whirlpool describes imbalance behavior in which a washer may add water and turn slowly while it attempts to redistribute the load. Bulky bedding belongs on its Bulky or Sheets/Bedding cycle, not Normal or Rapid Wash. A large load, a single heavy item or an uneven bundle can prevent a clean spin.
Causes, from settings to service
1. The lid or door is not registering as closed
The lid or door is not registering as closed
The lid-lock light flashes, the door code appears or the latch area is obstructed.

On a top-load Whirlpool, the lid must be securely closed before spinning. If the Lid Lock light flashes, check for visible interference around the latch and confirm the selector is on a cycle. Hold Start for up to three seconds when following Whirlpool’s top-load instruction.
For a front-load model, check the door and displayed code. F5 E2 indicates a door-lock problem. If the latch is clear and the code returns, arrange service. Do not replace or bypass a lock switch based on the light alone.
2. The load is unbalanced or too large
The load is unbalanced or too large
Clothing is bunched, bulky bedding is in a normal cycle or the machine repeatedly tries to rebalance.

Open the washer when it unlocks and spread the clothes around the basket. Whirlpool says the washer may try to rebalance a load by adding water and turning slowly; if it cannot correct the load, it may show an error and require you to redistribute items.
Use Bulky or Sheets/Bedding for large bedding on supported models. Do not overload the tub. If the washer stops repeatedly with different balanced loads, note the code and call Whirlpool support.
3. Low Spin or a delicate cycle was selected
A low-spin or delicate cycle was selected
The cycle is Delicate or Hand Wash, or Low/No Spin is selected.

- Time
- 3 minutes

Whirlpool says Low or No Spin can leave clothing wetter. Delicate and Hand Wash cycles also use slower spinning on its front-load models. Check the selected cycle and setting before assuming the machine failed to spin.
For a load that needs more extraction, choose a suitable cycle and spin option from the model guide. Do not use a faster spin if the garment’s care instructions or the washer manual says otherwise.
4. Excess suds are extending the rinse
Excess suds are extending the rinse
Sud or Sd appears or foam remains in the washer.

Sud or Sd indicates excess suds. Whirlpool says the washer may extend the rinse while it clears foam. Use HE detergent and follow the package directions for the load.
Whirlpool warns against no-splash or easy-pour liquid bleach, which can contribute to excess suds. Do not add another detergent dose while foam remains. If the code returns without visible foam, record it and request support.
5. The drain hose or standpipe is restricting the cycle
The drain hose or standpipe is restricting drainage
F9 E1 or F8 E1 appears, or the visible hose is kinked or inserted too far.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time

F9 E1 points to a longer-than-expected drain; F8 E1 or LO FL indicates low flow on Whirlpool front-load models. Check the exposed hose for bends and confirm that the household standpipe is not backing up.
Whirlpool gives 4.5 inches as the hose insertion depth and says not to tape over the drain opening. Its pages differ on standpipe height: one lists 30–96 inches, while other spinning guidance lists 39–96. Use the installation instructions for the exact model. The Whirlpool drain guide explains that discrepancy.
6. A belt, coupling or clutch may need service
A belt, coupling or clutch may need service
The washer fills and drains but the drum does not turn, and basic settings and load checks are clear.

If the washer fills and drains but the drum does not turn, a drive part may need inspection. iFixit lists a lid switch, belt, coupling and clutch among possible Whirlpool spin failures. Those are secondary repair suggestions; Whirlpool’s support pages focus first on the lid, load, cycle and drain.
Do not open the cabinet or replace a drive part yourself. Have a technician identify the failed component and explain the evidence before authorizing the repair.
7. F7 E1 or another motor-speed fault needs diagnosis
A motor-speed or internal fault needs diagnosis
F7 E1 returns after the transport-bolt and load checks, or the motor does not operate normally.

Whirlpool says F7 E1 is a motor-speed sensing error. It recommends confirming that all shipping bolts were removed and the washer is not overloaded. If the code remains after those checks, contact service.
Do not inspect the motor or wiring. A speed code does not identify whether the motor, control or another internal part failed. Ask the technician to diagnose the fault before replacing a part.
Read the front-load codes
Whirlpool groups F5 E2 with a door that will not lock, F7 E1 with motor-speed sensing, F8 E1 or LO FL with low flow, and F9 E1 with slow drainage. To clear a displayed code, its support instructions say to press Pause or Cancel twice, then Power once. Use a reset only after noting the code and fixing a visible setting or obstruction.
For F5 E2, check for an item caught at the door and confirm that it closes completely. For F7 E1, Whirlpool says to confirm shipping bolts were removed and the washer is not overloaded. For F8 E1 or LO FL, check the accessible water supply and hose; for F9 E1, use the drain-route checks above. A code’s first letter or number is not enough to identify the fault: record the complete combination.
The lid-lock light on a top-load washer has a separate clue. Whirlpool says the lid may not have moved into its locked position, the lock motor may not be receiving power, or interference may keep the lid from closing. Make sure a cycle is selected, check for visible obstruction and hold Start up to three seconds. If the light keeps flashing with a clear, closed lid, arrange service.
Top-load and front-load checks differ
| Washer type | Whirlpool-specific clue | First safe check |
|---|---|---|
| Top load | The lid must be securely closed; a late Add a Garment pause can limit maximum spin speed. | Check the latch area and whether the cycle was paused late. |
| Front load | Low/No Spin and Delicate or Hand Wash can use a slower spin. | Check the cycle and spin selection before diagnosing a part. |
| Either type | An unbalanced or bulky load can interrupt spin. | Redistribute the load and use the cycle intended for bulky bedding. |
Whirlpool’s Add a Garment feature changes what happens when you pause late in a cycle: the maximum spin speed may be limited. If clothing is wetter after a late pause, check whether the feature was used before suspecting a drive part. The washer not-spinning hub covers the general load checks.
Internal parts belong to a technician
iFixit lists a lid switch, belt, coupling and clutch as possible causes for a Whirlpool no-spin symptom and describes a multimeter continuity check for a lid switch. That is secondary repair information. Leave continuity and internal-part tests to a technician; ask them to identify the failed component if the washer fills and drains normally but the drum does not turn.
For a code not listed here, use the washer’s model manual or contact Whirlpool support. For a washer that will not drain, the washer not-draining hub covers the shared hose and suds checks. Codes from Samsung or GE do not have the same meanings and should not be applied to a Whirlpool model.
What the parts diagram can and cannot show
The diagram labels the lid lock, drum, belt, coupling and motor. It helps you describe the area to a technician; it does not show a repair procedure. A capacitor or internal drive part must be handled by a qualified professional.

When to call
Call if F7 E1 returns, the washer fills and drains but will not turn, the lid lock will not engage, or the same spin fault returns with a balanced load. Tell the technician whether the model is top-load or front-load, which cycle and spin setting were selected, and the exact code. For other causes such as water left in the tub, see the washer not-draining guide.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Whirlpool washer spin with the lid open?
Whirlpool says its top-load washer spins only when the lid is securely closed. Check for clothing or debris at the latch, but do not bypass the lock.
What does F7 E1 mean on a Whirlpool washer?
Whirlpool describes F7 E1 as a motor-speed sensing error. Check that transport bolts were removed and the washer is not overloaded; call service if the code returns.
Why are my clothes wet after a Whirlpool washer cycle?
Low or No Spin, Delicate or Hand Wash, a bulky load, excess suds or a drain restriction can leave clothes wetter. Check the selected cycle and display first.
Should I replace the belt or clutch myself?
No. Belt, coupling and clutch work requires opening the washer. Have a technician confirm the failed part before replacing it.
