If your washer will not start, check the cycle selector and the lock display first. A missing cycle choice, Control Lock or Child Lock can look like a dead washer. A lid or door warning that stays on after the opening is clear points to a different problem. The model matters: Whirlpool, Samsung and LG use different messages and controls.

Check these things first

Look at the control panel. Is a cycle selected? Whirlpool says the washer will not start if the selector is not set to a cycle. Select the intended cycle and press Start or Start/Pause as the control panel requires. If the screen lights but the washer does not respond, look for a lock symbol or code before repeating button presses.

Check the lid or door opening. Remove a garment caught between the door and seal, or anything resting across a top-load lid. Close it normally. Never force a locked door open, and do not hold down or bypass the lock to make a cycle run.

Read the exact display message and note whether the washer is top-load or front-load. A Samsung update message, an LG Child Lock indication and Whirlpool’s control lock are different situations. The washer not-spinning hub covers a machine that starts but stops before spinning. If water remains in the tub, use the washer not-draining guide.

What the control messages mean

The same two letters can mean different things on different brands. Use the model label and its manual when a display does not match the examples below. Do not treat a code as proof that a part has failed: manufacturers often list a first check before service.

Whirlpool says LOC or LC means the control lock is active on the front-load models covered by its error-code guidance. Press Control Lock according to the control’s labeling to release it. A top-load washer with a flashing lid-lock light is a separate issue. Whirlpool’s lid-lock guidance says the machine must recognize the lid as closed before it can start. Check the opening for an obstruction and close it normally; if the light keeps flashing, contact service rather than trying to defeat the lock.

Samsung’s US error list uses CL for Child Lock on covered models. It says a newer model can show CL after Child Lock drains the tub. Turn the washer off and on or disable Child Lock as the model’s controls specify. Samsung also lists door-related indications; use the matching model’s instructions rather than assuming the latch is broken.

LG distinguishes CL from door codes. CL is not an error: it is Child Lock, and the listed control action is to hold the designated button for three seconds. The button differs by model, so consult the label or manual instead of guessing. LG lists dE and dL among door-related codes. For a top-load dE, LG says to remove an object caught at the lid, close the lid firmly and press Start/Pause. Do not pull at an internal latch or remove a panel.

Samsung SDC or 5DC points to a detergent drawer that is not closed. Push the drawer closed until it clicks. Do not dismantle it or force the mechanism. If the code clears and the washer starts, the drawer was the relevant clue; if the display returns while the drawer is fully closed, record the code and ask Samsung support.

Samsung dn means an update is downloading. Samsung says that can take about 15 minutes. Leave the machine alone while the update is in progress. If it lasts beyond 30 minutes and the washer has no Wi-Fi problem, Samsung directs the owner to service. Do not interrupt the download by cutting power.

Causes, from simple checks to service

Some selectors can sit between cycle choices. Whirlpool states that its washer will not start unless the selector is placed on a cycle. Look for a lit cycle indicator, confirm the selection is intentional, then press the start control once.

If the panel is blank, select a cycle only after confirming the washer has power at the normal controls. Do not open the appliance to check the outlet wiring. If the panel lights but ignores the selected cycle, note any lock icon or displayed code and continue with the checks below.

2. The lid or door is not registering as closed

A garment at the opening or an object near the latch can stop the lock from engaging. Inspect only the visible edge, move fabric clear and close the lid or door normally. Whirlpool’s top-load guidance says the washer will not start with the lid open.

If the light continues flashing after the opening is clear, stop. Do not press, wedge or bypass the latch. The washer not-spinning hub covers safe checks for a cycle that starts but will not spin.

3. Control Lock or Child Lock is active

LOC and LC are Whirlpool control-lock messages in the front-load code list. Samsung and LG use CL for Child Lock on the models covered by their support pages. These messages describe a control setting, not a failed motor.

Use the button or sequence printed on your model’s panel or manual. Whirlpool says to press Control Lock for its LOC or LC indication. LG says to hold the designated Child Lock button for three seconds; Samsung says to disable Child Lock or turn the washer off and on for its listed case. Do not borrow a sequence from another brand.

4. A door code needs a model-specific check

A model-specific door code needs its listed check

dE, dL or a Samsung door indication appears on the display.

LG lists dE and dL for door-related conditions. On LG top-load models, dE can clear after removing an object, closing the lid firmly and pressing Start/Pause. A code that returns with the lid clear may need service.

Samsung’s door indications also depend on the model. Record the exact code and check its meaning in the manual. If the lock does not close securely, do not run the washer.

5. The detergent drawer is open

The detergent drawer is not fully closed

Samsung SDC or 5DC appears, or the dispenser drawer is visibly ajar.

Samsung SDC or 5DC indicates that the detergent drawer is not fully closed. Slide it in until it clicks, then check whether the code clears.

If the drawer is already seated but the message stays, do not pry it out or remove the washer top. Give support the full model number and code.

6. An update is still downloading

Samsung dn is an update status, not a door or motor diagnosis. Samsung says the download takes about 15 minutes. Leave the washer powered and let it finish.

If the display remains on dn beyond 30 minutes and there is no Wi-Fi issue, Samsung advises service. Do not unplug the washer during the update to try to force a reset.

Call a qualified appliance technician if the latch warning returns after the lid or door is clear, the lock will not secure, or the controls remain unresponsive after the model’s listed setting is corrected. A failed lock is only one possibility; the control or another part may be involved.

Do not remove panels or test the lock electrically. $110–$200Source: Washing Machine Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026 is a Fixr planning range for a door lock, not confirmation that your washer needs one. Ask for a diagnosis and an itemized estimate before approving work.

Stop and call a pro

Stop using the washer if the lock will not secure the lid or door, the breaker trips, the appliance smells hot or burnt, or a displayed fault persists after the model’s safe first check. Do not operate the washer with a defeated lock. A technician can inspect internal lock and control components without exposing you to moving parts or wiring.

What to tell support

Before contacting the manufacturer or a repair service, write down the full model number, the exact code, whether the machine is top-load or front-load and what happened after selecting a cycle. Mention whether the lock light flashes, whether the drawer is fully seated, and whether the washer was downloading an update. These details help separate an active setting from a latch that needs inspection.

If the only message is LOC, LC or CL, follow the control-lock instructions for that exact model. If the code is dE or dL, describe what is caught at the opening without reaching into the lock. If the panel remains silent or the lock cannot close, ask for a service diagnosis. Do not approve a replacement part based only on a short code label.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my washer turn on but not start?

The cycle may not be selected, or the controls may be locked. Whirlpool says its washer will not start without a cycle selection. Check the panel for LOC, LC, CL or a door code before requesting repair.

Should I unplug the washer when the lock light flashes?

Not as a general fix. Samsung says its dn update should not be interrupted. For other messages, follow the model-specific instructions; do not cut power while the display says an update is downloading.

Is CL a washer error code?

LG and Samsung identify CL as Child Lock on the pages used here. It is a control setting, but the release button or method varies by model.

Can I open the lid-lock switch to test it?

No. Do not bypass the lock or open the cabinet. If the lock warning remains after the opening is clear, have a qualified technician inspect it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my washer's lid lock light keep blinking?

Whirlpool says the lid must close and latch before a top-load washer starts. Check that clothing or an object is not caught at the lid, then close it normally. A flashing light that persists needs service.

What does CL mean on a washer?

On the LG and Samsung pages used here, CL refers to Child Lock rather than a mechanical failure. The button sequence depends on the model; use the control-lock instructions in its manual.

Why does a washer show dn and not start?

Samsung says dn means the washer is downloading an update, which can take about 15 minutes. Do not turn it off during that process.
