If your washer shakes during spin, first check whether it was installed correctly and whether the load is balanced. LG identifies shipping bolts, leveling and load distribution among its vibration checks. GE also says its transport bar must be removed after installation. Do not start with an assumption that a suspension part has failed.
Two-minute checks before another spin
Wait until the drum stops. If the door unlocks normally, look at how the clothes are distributed. A single bulky item or a pile gathered on one side can throw off the spin. Spread the load and remove items if the tub is packed tightly. LG recommends keeping the load around two-thirds of the drum capacity for the covered guidance.
Look at the washer’s feet and the floor without moving the machine. Press gently on opposite top corners. If it rocks, or if one foot is not planted, the washer may need leveling. LG specifies a level, solid floor and says all four feet should support the appliance. Do not put your hands under the machine to adjust a foot while it is loaded or powered.
If the washer was just installed, moved or replaced, check the model’s installation sheet for shipping restraints. LG says shipping bolts and retainers must be removed before use. GE says its transportation bar must be removed after installation and kept for a future move. If you cannot identify the correct restraint for your model, ask the installer or manufacturer.
The washer not-spinning hub explains how a balance problem can also leave clothes wet. For a model-specific LG load check, see the LG washer not-spinning guide.
Causes to check in order

A washer that shakes severely from its first cycle after installation may still have a transportation restraint or packing material in place. LG says failure to remove the shipping bolts and retainers before use can cause severe vibration and noise. GE says to remove its transport bar after installation.
Use the installation guide for the exact model to identify each restraint. LG’s instructions describe checking whether the tub moves when gently pushed forward and back. If it does not move as the guide describes, the bolts may remain installed. Do not pull at unidentified parts or tip a heavy washer without another person. Keep removed shipping hardware for a future move, as GE instructs.
2. The washer is not level

The washer rocks when opposite corners are pressed or a foot is visibly not resting on the floor.

LG says to press opposite corners and check whether the washer rocks. If it does, the feet may not be adjusted evenly. LG’s instructions say to adjust the feet on the side that drops, make sure all four feet touch the floor and tighten the locking nuts.
Make this check with the machine empty and off. Follow the manual for the foot adjustment. Do not put a hand beneath the cabinet or tilt the washer alone. If it remains unstable after adjustment, ask the installer to correct the setup.
3. The load is uneven
The load is unevenly distributed
Laundry is gathered to one side or one bulky item repeatedly triggers vibration.

A wet garment or one bulky item can settle on one side and make the drum shake. LG lists an unbalanced load as a cause. A machine may pause, redistribute the load or stop when it cannot balance the contents.
Wait until the drum has stopped and the door unlocks by itself. Spread the items around the drum. LG recommends a load around two-thirds of capacity in the covered guidance. For a small load, add similar items only if the care labels and washer manual allow it. Do not hold a door open to reach a moving drum.
4. The load is too large
The load is too large or tightly packed
The tub is packed and items cannot move freely during the cycle.

- 5 minutes

A tightly packed tub leaves little room for the load to move and redistribute. LG names load size as a vibration factor. Reduce the load and use the cycle recommended for the fabric and item type.
Do not pull a saturated, heavy item from a locked machine. Wait for the cycle to stop and the door to release normally. If a smaller load still shakes, check the shipping restraints, level and floor before concluding the washer needs a part.
5. The floor does not provide solid support
The floor may not provide the solid support LG specifies
The setup and load checks are clear but strong vibration continues on a floor that flexes.

LG specifies a level, solid floor for its vibration guidance. If the appliance is level and the load is balanced but the floor flexes, the floor may contribute to movement. The provided instructions do not give a floor-repair procedure.
Do not wedge loose objects under the feet. Ask the installer or a qualified contractor whether the floor can support the washer as installed. If the machine is on a pedestal, follow that model’s installation requirements.
6. Suspension may need professional inspection

Do not diagnose suspension by opening the cabinet. If the washer continues to shake after the restraints, load, feet and floor have been checked, arrange a professional inspection. The source list for this draft does not establish a safe owner test for an internal suspension part.

Top-load washers: the load is the usual suspect
Whirlpool’s top-load page names an unbalanced load as the primary cause of shaking. Signs it lists are loud spin noise, excessive shaking and clothes that are still wet at the end of the cycle. When the load is off balance at the start of the spin, the basket can move. If the washer stops spinning, redistribute the load by hand. Whirlpool says the washer may first refill and gently rotate to self-correct, and that it shows an error message if it cannot even the load out.
Whirlpool’s loading advice is concrete. Place clothes in loose heaps spread evenly around the center post. Spread absorbent items such as quilts or cotton blankets in a doughnut shape around the impeller. Do not wash a single absorbent item such as one rug; wash two or three, and wash similar items together. Add clothes loosely, no higher than the top row of holes in the basket, and do not add extra water, because clothes need to engage the impeller or items float and cleaning drops. Whirlpool also warns that the Bulky cycle is meant for oversized, nonabsorbent items such as comforters and pillows; other items could float above the impeller and cause imbalance. Check the care label to confirm the item can be machine washed in a top-load washer. Whirlpool adds that the basket normally moves front to back and side to side during operation, so some movement is not a fault.
Front-load washers: feet, jam nuts and the floor
Amana’s front-load page, which comes from the same Whirlpool group, lists the same causes in a particular order. First, shipping bolts: remove all shipping materials, which the page says is necessary for proper operation and to avoid excess noise. Second, feet: grip the top of the washer and rock it front to back, then side to side, and make sure all four feet stay in firm contact with the floor. If it rocks, adjust the leveling feet per the installation instructions, and when all four are firm, tighten the jam nuts against the base of the cabinet. The page warns that the jam nuts must be tight against the bottom of the cabinet. For pedestal installs, confirm the mounting screws are tight, the pedestal feet contact the floor and the foot lock nut is tight to the frame.
Third, the floor. Amana says to check it for flexing or sagging and warns not to install the washer on a raised wooden platform. Whirlpool’s general page adds that if the floor is uneven or not sturdy enough, the area can be reinforced or a washer vibration pad used to absorb movement. Neither page gives a floor-repair method, so a floor that bounces under the washer is a question for a contractor, not for a feet adjustment. Fourth, load: Amana says not to pack the drum tightly because clothes should move freely, and to balance a single bulky item such as a rug or jean jacket by adding a few extra items. If the problem persists, both brands direct owners to schedule service.
Stop and call a pro
Stop the washer if it walks, bangs hard against a wall or continues vibrating violently after the load stops. Call the installer if this began immediately after setup. Call a technician if vibration persists after the visible load and level checks. Do not open the washer to inspect suspension, drive parts or electrical components.
After the setup checks
If the machine is newly installed, contact the installer with the model number and describe whether the tub moves freely and whether the washer rocks. If it was working before and the vibration began later, note the cycle, load size and whether the floor or appliance location changed. A repeatable description helps service distinguish installation from an internal fault.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my washer shake violently after installation?
LG says shipping bolts and packing retainers must be removed before use. GE also says to remove its transportation bar after installation. Check the model's installation instructions before running another load.
Can an unbalanced load make a washer walk?
LG lists an unbalanced load as a cause of vibration. Stop the cycle, wait for the drum to stop and redistribute the clothes if the door unlocks normally.
Should I keep using a washer that walks across the floor?
Stop a severe shake. Check the visible setup and load; if vibration persists, arrange service rather than opening the cabinet.
