Find the wettest point before moving food or wiping everything dry. This refrigerator leaking water inside guide separates visible filter and dispenser causes from condensation and hidden drain issues. Note whether water appears after dispensing, after a door stays open, or without either event.

Start with what you can see

Look for water around the filter housing, on a shelf under a container, at the dispenser, or at the bottom of the fresh-food section. Check whether a filter was just replaced and whether the kitchen sink or refrigerator dispenser has a water-flow issue. Do not pull the refrigerator out or remove an interior panel.

Causes, from visible drips to a service call

1. The water filter is not seated or is damaged

The water filter is not seated or is damaged

Water appears near the filter housing, especially after a cartridge change.

Whirlpool says a filter that is not installed correctly or is damaged can leak. This is more likely if the water appeared after a cartridge change or is concentrated near the filter housing. Check the filter’s position using the instructions for the model.

Whirlpool’s page says to remove the filter and reinstall it. Do that only if the cartridge is accessible and the manual describes the process. Do not force a filter that will not lock or use a cartridge that is visibly damaged.

If the leak continues after the correct installation, stop using the dispenser and arrange service. A drip that persists is not a reason to keep removing and reinserting the filter.

Whirlpool says a few drops after dispensing can be normal. Hold a glass firmly against the paddle until the flow stops, then keep it there for two to three seconds. A new filter may also need the model’s stated flush after installation.

Watch where the drops land. If water appears only just after using the dispenser and then stops, it may be residual water. If a puddle grows while the dispenser is idle, check the filter and visible supply and call if the source remains unclear.

Do not remove the dispenser panel or reach into its controls. A continuous stream or water behind the housing needs service.

3. Condensation forms on a warm or damaged container

Condensation forms on a warm or damaged container

Water is limited to a shelf near a warm container or a cracked vessel.

Whirlpool says warm containers can create condensation on a refrigerator shelf. It also advises checking whether a container is cracked. Water limited to one shelf near a recent warm item fits this cause better than a leak that returns with no container nearby.

Remove the container, dry the shelf and check it again later. Do not pour liquid into the refrigerator to reproduce the leak. If water returns in the same place with no warm or damaged container, continue to the door and drain checks.

A cracked container should be removed from food storage. If water is coming from below a drawer or wall instead, do not assume condensation; arrange an inspection.

Whirlpool says frequent or prolonged door openings and blocked vents can increase frost and condensation. Check whether a package prevents the door from closing or whether the gasket has visible moisture or damage. Keep the rear vents clear.

Dry accessible moisture and make sure the door closes. Avoid stretching or removing the gasket. If the seal is torn, the door is misaligned or frost repeatedly appears around the frame, contact Whirlpool or a technician.

GE describes water dripping into a pan below the refrigerator during normal defrost. A gurgling sound after a door closes can also come from water in the drain-tube trap. These sounds do not by themselves prove a leak.

5. A defrost drain or heater needs service

Water that repeatedly pools at the bottom of the fresh-food compartment or escapes under the appliance can involve a hidden drain path. GE says defrost water normally drips into a pan below the refrigerator. Whirlpool’s cited interior-water page does not provide an owner procedure for clearing a defrost drain.

Do not push wire into a hidden tube, pour cleaner into the drain or remove the rear panel. The available source facts do not support a safe, model-independent clearing method. Ask a technician to inspect the drain and defrost components.

The Fixr range below is a secondary planning estimate for thermostat work, not a diagnosis of the drain or heater.

6. A water-line connection may be leaking

A water-line connection may be leaking

Water appears near a visible hose or continues to collect while the dispenser is unused.

If water keeps appearing while the dispenser is unused, a water-line connection may be involved. Look only at the accessible section without moving the refrigerator. Do not disconnect a hose or tighten a fitting while the appliance is connected.

Stop using the dispenser if you see a steady leak. If the water source is behind the appliance or inside a cabinet, call a plumber or appliance technician. A line leak requires identifying the correct shutoff and connection before any work starts.

Follow the visible path

Dispenser drops, filter leaks and water inside the fresh-food compartment appear in different places. A small puddle near the filter after a cartridge change suggests a different check from water that appears below the drawers. GE says some defrost water drains into a pan underneath; Whirlpool’s available page discusses filters, dispenser drips and condensation but does not give drain-clearing steps.

What LG and Frigidaire add

Whirlpool’s page focuses on the filter, condensation and the drain. LG and Frigidaire each list different causes, and together they cover most of the leaks owners report.

LG: start with the food, then the drain

LG’s page on water leaking inside the refrigerator lists seven items. The first four involve what you put in:

  1. A leaking container. A container that is slightly open lets food leak out. Store moist or liquid food in sealed containers and check that lids are closed.
  2. Hot food. Hot food meets the cold air and produces condensed water. Let it cool before refrigerating.
  3. Overloading or shelf changes. Too much food, or moving shelves and letting outside air in, can cause condensation or frost. Do not overfill, and close the door fully after rearranging shelves.
  4. A door not fully shut, especially in summer, when water may form. Make sure it closes completely.

The remaining items are about what is already there and what is blocked. Wipe existing condensation or frost with a warm dish towel. And LG describes a blocked drain at the bottom of the freezer or refrigerator: trace water or ice at the bottom suggests defrost water is bypassing the drain tray. Its fix is to move excess food to another refrigerator if you have one, unplug the product and leave the door fully open. LG says the ice takes about one day to melt in summer and about three days in winter. Once the ice has fully melted, the water should drain into the drain tray. For a four-door refrigerator, water or ice pooled in the multi-purpose drawer under the vegetable drawer suggests the same blockage; the page gives no separate fix, so the thawing procedure appears to apply. If you are worried about the food inside, LG recommends requesting a service visit.

LG’s second page, on water leaks, helps with the question of where the water is really coming from. Check under the vegetable crisper first. If there is no water there, look at the nearby area and floor. Water that leaked from inside onto the floor points to an unsealed container, hot food or a door left partly open. Water that came from around the refrigerator can be a purifier hose installed incorrectly near the refrigerator, or water from a sink drain or boiler flowing toward it. LG says to examine the space beneath the sink, the purifier hose connections and other adjacent spots. Both pages say they were created for all models, so your images and details may differ.

Frigidaire: filter, door and chute

Frigidaire’s water-leaks article separates leaks outside, inside and at the dispenser, and its inside list is short:

  • A recently changed water filter. Confirm it is installed correctly and securely.
  • A cracked filter. Cracks can leak into the cabinet and cause slow or no water at the dispenser. Remove the filter from its housing and check for cracks and leaks, and replace it if it is cracked or leaking.
  • A door left open for an extended time. The evaporator can ice up and leak from the bottom of the ice maker. Close the door, and the unit should return to normal.

For leaks outside the unit it lists loose water connections or a valve at the back. Its instruction is to pull the unit out from the wall, wipe the water lines, connections and valve with a dry paper towel to check for moisture, and push the connections together to tighten them. Only do this if you can reach the connections safely; if the line is under pressure and leaking, shut off the supply and call a plumber or technician.

For leaks at the dispenser, Frigidaire says melting ice in the chute can run down it, so open the door, look down the chute and clear any frost or ice. Droplets or a wet tip at the dispenser can be air in the water line, and the article refers you to the use and care manual. If the problem persists and the unit was installed in the past 30 days, contact the installer; after that, contact Frigidaire.

Which of these fits a leak inside the refrigerator?

What you see Most likely cause Source
Puddle on a shelf or in a bin right after loading Open container or hot food LG
Water on the glass shelves in summer Door not fully shut; humid air LG, Whirlpool
Water in the crisper drawer or under it Blocked defrost drain LG, Whirlpool
Slow dispenser with water inside the cabinet Cracked or badly seated filter Frigidaire
Ice and water under the ice maker Door left open, evaporator iced up Frigidaire
Water on the floor but dry inside Supply connection, sink or purifier hose nearby Frigidaire, LG

If the drain keeps blocking, the freezer frost buildup guide covers the frost that tends to cause it, and the water dispenser guide covers the dispenser-side symptoms.

When to call

Call a technician when water repeatedly returns at the bottom of the compartment, runs beneath the appliance, or appears near a hidden water line. Use the refrigerator cooling guide if the leak comes with frost or a temperature change. For a dispenser that also has weak flow, see the water-dispenser guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there water under the crisper drawers?

The sources here do not give an owner procedure for clearing a refrigerator defrost drain. If water repeatedly pools at the bottom of the fresh-food section, call a technician to inspect the drain path.

Is water dripping from a refrigerator dispenser normal?

Whirlpool says a few drops after dispensing can be normal. It recommends holding a glass at the paddle for two to three seconds after the flow stops.

Could a water filter cause a refrigerator leak?

Whirlpool says a filter that is not installed correctly or is damaged can leak. Reinstall it as the model instructions show and stop if water continues.

When should I call a technician for a refrigerator leak?

Call if water keeps collecting, comes from a hidden drain or line, or cannot be traced to a filter, dispenser drip or container. Do not remove panels or disconnect a water line.
