This refrigerator ice-maker guide covers shared checks. LG’s page adds a model-specific temperature target, control location and test sequence; use the model manual if your layout differs.
1. The refrigerator is still stabilizing
The refrigerator is still stabilizing
The unit was installed less than a day ago or the compartment temperature was recently changed.

LG says an installation less than 24 hours old may not yet have produced ice. The page frames this as up to 24 hours per compartment. Do not treat an empty bin during that period as proof that the maker failed.
Wait for the model’s stated interval after installation. If the refrigerator was just moved or restarted, check the exact manual rather than adding a second brand’s wait time.
2. The freezer is too warm for ice production
The freezer is too warm for ice production
The freezer is above LG's stated range or has not had time to recover after a setting change.

- thermometer
LG says the freezer should be below 19°F and recommends −4°F (−20°C) for ice production. After changing the setting, LG says to allow 24 hours. That threshold is specific to LG’s cited guidance; it is not a universal refrigerator target.
Use the displayed temperature or a thermometer without removing a panel. If the freezer cannot reach the setting, diagnose cooling first in the refrigerator not-cooling guide, not by replacing the ice-maker assembly.
3. The ice function is off
The ice function is off
The control shows Ice Off or the model's ice-on setting is not active.

LG says the physical ON/OFF switch sits to the left of the maker on models with that switch. Other models use the Ice On/Ice Off control; the page says to hold the button for three to five seconds if ICE ON is not lit. The control varies by refrigerator type.
Confirm the right control in the manual. After switching it on, LG says to wait 24 hours. Do not use the test button repeatedly as a substitute for the normal control.
4. The model’s documented reset or test is needed
The model's documented reset or test is needed
The setting and temperature are correct but the maker has not rotated or received water.

- towel
LG’s page says to put a towel beneath the maker, then hold its test button for about three seconds until it starts to rotate. Some models use a paper clip at the test hole instead. The test checks whether the motor turns and whether water or ice appears in the tray.
LG says that if the refrigerator was plugged in during the first two hours, the test may run only once. Its page describes unplugging for about 30 seconds before repeating it. Follow that sequence only if the model manual matches. Do not reach into moving parts or repeat a test with a full tray.
LG also describes removing the bucket, gently shaking the maker up and down a couple of times, replacing it, and turning the unit off for 30 seconds before turning it on. Use that reset only as written for your model; do not force a stuck bucket.
5. The ice maker needs service
The ice maker needs service
The maker still does not make or eject ice four to six hours after the documented reset.

LG says to request repair if the maker still does not make or eject ice four to six hours after its reset. The same page says that the test checks motor rotation and water or ice in the tray; it does not provide a general repair procedure for the water line, filter, pressure, door switch or an obstruction.
Keep the model number and record whether the test rotated and added water. If the dispenser also has weak flow, include that separate symptom. For an estimate, Fixr’s refrigerator ice-maker range is shown below as a secondary planning figure; it does not diagnose the failed part.

LG publishes a separate US article for a maker that is producing too little, and it lists checks that the page above does not. Read them in this order, because the first ones are free.
New refrigerator. LG says to wait 12 hours to two days for the first batch of ice, and to allow two to three days for the ice bin to fill completely. That is longer than the 24-hour figure on its other page, so for a brand-new unit take the longer window.
Ice off or panel locked. Press and hold the Lock button for three seconds to unlock the panel, then press the Ice On/Off, In-Door Ice, Cubed Ice or Craft Ice button, holding it for three seconds on some models.
Freezer too warm or the door opened often. Lower the freezer temperature by one to two degrees and monitor ice production for 24 hours. Make sure the door closes completely, and turn on Express Freeze or Ice Plus, which LG’s page names without further detail.
Water supply. Confirm the supply valve, under the sink or behind the unit, is fully open, and that the supply hose is not kinked or compressed. If the model has an internal water tank, make sure it holds enough water. Replace the water filter if it has been used for more than six months; LG notes well water can clog filters faster. After a filter change, dispense about 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters) to purge trapped air, since air in the line can interrupt the supply.
Clumped ice. Remove the ice bin and gently shake it to separate the ice, discarding large clumps that will not separate. Clean the bin, let it dry completely and reinstall it. Ice that sits unused for a long time can partially melt and refreeze, so LG says to turn the ice maker off if you will not use it for an extended period.
Craft Ice models. Install the bin with the handle facing forward, seated in the grooves below the upper drawer, and store only ice in the bin.
A temporary system fault. Press and hold the test button or recessed test switch on the lower-left side or front of the ice maker for three seconds. If you cannot find the test button, unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker, wait at least three minutes and restore power. Output varies by model, room temperature and how often the door opens, and an error code should be looked up before anything else.
When ice comes out wrong, not missing
Two further LG pages cover ice that is present but behaves badly, and they are easy to mistake for a failed maker.
Crushed ice when set to cubed. LG says that after switching from crushed to cubed, leftover crushed ice may still dispense, so confirm the correct dispenser type is selected; the button location varies by model and year. Cubes can clump or break when the dispenser engages, especially with low use, and LG calls that normal. Shake the bin to loosen the cubes or break them apart with an ice pick, reinsert the bucket properly and try again. If the icemaker compartment door does not close fully, the unit cannot hold a steady temperature, ice melts and refreezes, and cubes break apart and clump. Frequent crushed-ice use can leave fragments in the dispenser chute; wipe them out with a damp cloth, reinstall the bucket and test again.
Ice will not release. LG’s dispenser page starts with the control lock: press and hold LOCK for three seconds, wait for the icon to show unlocked, place a cup below the dispenser and try again. Check whether the bin has ice, since an empty bin sends you back to the no-ice checks. Clumped cubes and a clogged delivery chute are the next two. If water does not come out when the dispenser is set to water, LG says that points to a problem that needs service.
For prevention, LG suggests resetting the ice maker and watching for water dripping off the tray or spraying as it enters, checking the door gasket for tears and confirming it is properly connected to the liner, and lowering the freezer temperature. If water sprays or drips into the bucket, or clumping continues, LG says the refrigerator needs repair.
A practical order for an LG that makes no ice
- Unlock the panel and confirm the ice function is on.
- Count the days since installation or a long power outage: allow up to two days for the first ice and two to three for a full bin.
- Check the freezer setting against LG’s targets and keep the door closed.
- Open the supply valve fully, straighten the hose and replace a filter older than six months, then purge about 2.5 gallons.
- Shake or clear the bin if cubes have clumped.
- Run LG’s test or reset only as the manual for your model describes, with a towel under the maker.
- Request repair if the maker still does not cycle after four to six hours.
What this LG page does not settle
The cited LG page points to separate articles for ice dispensing and error codes. It does not explain every water-path fault or give a pressure test. If the maker is on, cold enough and still empty, use the shared ice-maker diagnosis for the supported supply checks, or contact LG for the exact model.
If the maker has ice but the door will not dispense it, report that separately. The refrigerator water-dispenser guide covers low flow and dispenser symptoms. Stop and call if the water connection leaks or the unit needs an internal panel removed.
