If your dishwasher will not start, check the door, display and water supply before assuming the control board failed. Whirlpool and GE list several settings that can delay or block a cycle. A dark display needs a different check from a lit lock icon.

Check the obvious controls first

Look at the display before pressing buttons repeatedly. A lit lock icon can mean Control Lock is active. Whirlpool says a button pressed while locked may flash three times. That response is different from a completely dark control panel. If the display shows hours such as “2H,” GE says the unit may have Delay Start selected. The cycle will wait until the displayed delay ends unless you cancel it with the controls for your model.

Close the door and listen for the latch. Check that a rack is in its normal position and no dish or trim blocks the door. Whirlpool notes that a lower rack installed backward can interfere with closure. GE also lists a cutout or cabinet obstruction as a reason the door may not engage. Do not force the latch; first remove the visible obstruction and close the door normally.

Check that the water supply is turned on. Whirlpool says the cycle may not start if the dishwasher does not detect water. You can look at an accessible shutoff without pulling out the appliance or disconnecting a line. If the valve is behind the machine or the hose is trapped, ask an installer or plumber to inspect it.

If the panel is dark, check whether the room’s other lights and appliances have power. For an appliance that plugs into an accessible outlet, confirm the plug has not been disturbed. Whirlpool’s instructions for a hardwired unit say to check whether its circuit breaker has tripped. Do not remove the dishwasher’s junction cover or test the live circuit yourself. If the breaker trips again after reset, leave it off and call service.

Causes, from settings to service

1. Power is interrupted

Power is interrupted

The display is dark or the dishwasher has no response when you press a control.

A dark panel with no response points first to power. If the dishwasher uses an accessible plug, check that it remains seated. Whirlpool says an installation wired directly to the home circuit should be checked for a tripped breaker.

Do not open the appliance or electrical panel. If the breaker is tripped, a single reset may restore operation. A repeat trip is a stop signal: leave it off and ask a qualified technician to find the fault.

2. The door is not fully latched

The door is not fully latched

The door catches on a rack, trim or cabinet edge, or does not close flush.

Look for a rack in the wrong orientation, a tall dish near the door, or cabinet trim that catches the door. Whirlpool and GE both identify an unlatched door as a start problem. GE also lists an opening or cabinet obstruction that prevents the latch from engaging.

Remove the obstruction and close the door normally. If it still will not catch, do not bypass or manipulate the latch switch. Arrange service.

3. Control Lock is on

Control Lock is on

A lock icon is lit or a pressed button flashes instead of starting a cycle.

A lock symbol or a button flashing three times is consistent with Whirlpool’s Control Lock description. Use the model’s control-lock procedure shown on its panel or in the owner manual. Button combinations vary, so do not guess at a sequence.

GE also lists a control lock among reasons a dishwasher may not start. Once the lock indicator clears, select a cycle and press Start as the model directs. If the lock returns or the controls remain unresponsive, record the display and call the manufacturer or service provider.

4. Delay Start is selected

Delay Start is selected

The display shows a remaining delay or the cycle is scheduled to start later.

A displayed number followed by H may show the remaining delay on a GE model. Whirlpool says a delayed cycle does not run until the wait period ends. Cancel the delay using the controls for your dishwasher, then choose a cycle again.

Do not treat a scheduled start as a failed motor. Confirm that the delay indicator disappears before testing another setting. If the display remains in a mode you cannot identify, photograph it and check the model manual.

5. The water supply is off

The water supply is off

The supply valve is closed or the washer reports that water was not detected.

Whirlpool says a dishwasher may not begin if it does not detect water. Check that the accessible household shutoff is open. If the hose is bent or pinched where you can see it without moving the appliance, note that for the installer.

Do not loosen the inlet connection or pull out a built-in unit. If the shutoff is inaccessible, the hose is trapped, or water does not reach the dishwasher after the safe check, call a plumber or appliance technician.

6. Demo, Sleep or Sabbath mode is active

A special operating mode is active

The display and sounds are suppressed, or the unit is in Demo or Sleep mode.

Difficulty
Easy
Time
3 minutes

GE lists Demo mode and Sleep or Sabbath mode as conditions that can make a dishwasher appear inactive. Sleep or Sabbath mode can suppress lights and sounds. A quiet display therefore does not always mean the appliance has lost power.

Use the exact mode-exit instruction for the model. Do not use a reset sequence from another model. If the dishwasher remains in Demo or the panel gives no clear indication, ask GE support for the model-specific steps.

7. A float or leak-detection fault needs service

A float or leak-detection fault needs service

Water detection or a stuck float is reported and the ordinary control checks do not clear it.

GE lists a stuck float on certain GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT and ZDT models, and leak detection on models with an LCD. These are model-specific clues, not a reason to open the base or defeat a safety sensor.

If the display indicates a leak or the dishwasher will not start after the external checks, close the water supply if a leak is visible and arrange service. Do not tip the appliance or reach into the base to dry it.

When the door will not latch on a new or recently reloaded unit

GE’s separate latch page adds causes that are easy to miss. A new dishwasher can have a stiff gasket, and GE says it can take up to ten cycles of wash heat for the gasket to shape itself and become more pliable. On a new unit, GE suggests pushing in on the top center of the control panel while closing the door. Before that, GE tells owners to cut power at the plug or breaker, then look at the door edges and top: if the door touches cabinetry or screws under the counter, the installer needs to adjust it.

Rack loading matters too. GE lists dishes or silverware that extend past the front or back of the racks, items poking through the lower rack so it cannot roll fully in, and a loose utensil that blocks the door. On GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT and ZDT models with an adjustable upper rack, GE says the rack moves up or down about two inches and should never be raised or lowered on only one side, because an uneven rack stops the door from closing fully. If none of that fixes the latch, GE directs owners to schedule a repair.

Samsung: power button, breaker and wall switch

Samsung treats a dishwasher that will not turn on as a different problem from one that powers on but will not run. Its first step is simply pressing the Power button, because a cycle cannot be selected until the unit is on. Samsung says wet or soapy hands may not register on the pad; dry your hands, and if the button is dirty, wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth.

Next Samsung checks the circuit breaker. If one is tripped, switch it fully off and then fully on. If it trips again, Samsung says to stop and contact an electrician. Samsung also points out that many newer homes have a light-style wall switch near the dishwasher that controls its power; confirm it is on. If the unit powers up but will not run when Start is pressed, Samsung sends owners to a separate article on dishwashers that do not start or fill. If the checks do not help, Samsung’s last step is a service request. When the problem began at installation, Samsung says service is not needed first: have the installer confirm the electrical requirements are met.

The diagram puts the checks in the order that costs least and risks least.

If the appliance hums but does not begin

GE gives a narrow procedure for a hum without startup on GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT and ZDT models: pour one pint of hot tap water into the tub, press Start and allow five minutes. Do not extend this instruction to another model or brand. If your exact model is not listed, use its manual or contact GE support.

Whirlpool’s power reset is to press Cancel, disconnect power at the plug or circuit breaker for about one minute, then restore power. Follow that sequence only when you can cut power safely. A reset does not repair a failed latch, leak sensor or electrical fault. If the same failure returns, stop repeating resets and schedule service.

When to call

Call when the breaker trips again, the display reports a leak, the door will not latch after obstructions are removed, or the controls stay inactive after the model-specific checks. Tell the technician whether the panel was dark, a lock or delay was displayed, the door caught, and whether the unit made a hum. Those observations narrow the symptom without asking you to test live parts.

For water that remains in the tub after a cycle, see the dishwasher not-draining hub. If the machine runs but dishes remain dirty, use the dishwasher cleaning checks or drying guide; those symptoms begin after the cycle has started.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dishwasher beep but not start?

Check whether Control Lock or Delay Start is active and whether the door closes fully. A lock icon or delay display can explain why a button does not begin the cycle.

Can an open water valve stop a dishwasher from starting?

Whirlpool says a cycle may not start when the dishwasher does not detect water. Confirm the supply is open without disconnecting the hose.

How do I reset a dishwasher that will not start?

Whirlpool's listed reset is to press Cancel, disconnect power at the plug or breaker for about one minute, then restore it. Do not open an electrical panel on the appliance.
