If your dishwasher is not drying dishes, check rinse aid, cycle settings and loading before assuming the heating element failed. A few drops on the tub after a cycle can be normal, and Samsung says its condensation-dry models do not dry every material the same way. Brand temperature figures differ; use the number from your own maker.

Check the cycle and load first

Look at the control panel. GE and Whirlpool name Heated Dry or Extended Heat Dry; Eco and Quick cycles can use less heat or time. Bosch says to use Sanitize or Extra Dry when those options are available on the model. Do not assume that every dishwasher has the same control or drying method.

Check the rinse-aid dispenser and refill it according to the manual. GE says water left at the bottom of the tub after drying can be normal. Empty the lower rack first so water on upper dishes does not spill onto dishes below. Separate items so water can drain, and place plastic in the upper rack when the model instructions allow it.

Note what remains wet. Plastic can stay damp in a condensation-dry cycle even when the machine is working; a bowl with a lip can hold water; a load that stopped early may not have reached the drying phase. Those clues lead to different next checks. Do not replace a part based only on a wet plastic cup.

Water temperature figures differ by brand

GE says incoming water should be 120–140 °F. Samsung US gives a range of 120–149 °F. Whirlpool says the ideal tap water is about 120 °F and suggests running the hot tap for 30–60 seconds before starting. These are three source-specific statements, not one combined temperature range. Check your model manual and use the applicable manufacturer’s figure.

GE also says not to run the dishwasher during or just after another hot-water use. A shared hot-water demand can affect the water reaching the appliance. If the dishes are consistently wet across different cycles, check the supply temperature rather than changing several cycle options at once.

Use the shape and material of the wet items to decide what to change. If only plastic is damp while glass and ceramic are dry, Samsung’s description of condensation drying is a better fit than a failed heater. If cups and bowls hold droplets inside their rims, change how they face so water can drain. If every rack is wet after a completed cycle, check rinse aid and the selected dry option before treating it as a repair.

Rinse aid and heated drying address different parts of the process. GE says rinse aid helps water sheet off surfaces and advises raising its dispenser setting one level when drying remains poor. Whirlpool says a heated cycle should leave the tub warm and may leave steam; it also advises opening the door after the cycle. Neither check proves a particular part has failed. Compare the result across completed cycles with the same load and option before calling.

Do not blend the brand figures into one target. GE’s 120–140 °F, Samsung US’s 120–149 °F and Whirlpool’s about 120 °F come from separate recommendations. If you measure below your maker’s guidance, the household hot-water supply may need attention. If the measured supply matches its guidance but the tub remains cold after a supported heated cycle, the next step is service rather than a home test of the heating circuit.

Causes, from cycle settings to service

1. The rinse-aid dispenser is empty

The rinse-aid dispenser is empty

The rinse-aid indicator is low or dishes remain wet despite a completed cycle.

GE, Samsung, Whirlpool and Bosch include rinse aid in their drying advice. Refill the dispenser if its indicator is low, using the procedure and product guidance for your model. GE says to increase its rinse-aid setting one level if dishes remain wet.

Do not put rinse aid directly on dishes or guess at the dispenser dose. If the indicator remains on after refilling, check the manual for the model’s meaning before assuming the dispenser failed.

2. Heated Dry or Extended Heat Dry is off

Heated Dry or Extended Heat Dry is off

The selected GE or Whirlpool cycle does not include a heated-dry option.

GE and Whirlpool list heated drying as an option on supported models. If it is off, the cycle may rely on residual heat or condensation. Select Heated Dry or Extended Heat Dry only if the manual shows that option.

Whirlpool says to open the door after a Heated Dry cycle and check whether the tub feels warm and may contain steam. Do not touch the heating element. If the tub is not warm after repeated heated cycles, stop and call service.

3. An Eco or Quick cycle reduced drying

An Eco or Quick cycle reduced drying time or heat

The cycle is Eco or Quick and the dishes are slightly damp at the end.

Whirlpool says Eco or Quick cycles reduce heat and drying time. Samsung says Eco Dry can reduce heat output in some dishwasher models. A slightly damp load after one of those settings is not the same as a complete loss of heat.

Try a cycle with the drying option your model supports. GE says heavy cycles such as Cookware or Pots and Pans provide more heat on its covered models. Follow the cycle guide rather than assuming a heavier setting exists on every appliance.

4. Plastic dishes cooled before they dried

Plastic dishes cooled before they dried

Plastic items are wetter than glass or ceramic after a condensation-dry cycle.

Samsung says most of its dishwashers use condensation drying: vapor condenses on the stainless tub walls rather than on the dishes. Plastic cools quickly and can dry less well than glass or ceramic. Samsung says service will not improve this normal drying behavior.

Use the upper rack for plastic if the manual allows it. For some models, Samsung says to open the door about one inch in the hour after the cycle. Do not apply that instruction to another brand unless its manual says the same.

5. Dishes are nested or holding water

Dishes are nested or holding water

Items touch, face upward, or have lips and dimples that collect water.

Separate pieces so water can drain. GE notes that dishes with dimples can hold water. Empty the lower rack first to avoid water from the upper rack dripping onto dry dishes. Bosch also recommends arranging dishes so they do not block the spray arms.

Place plastic on the upper rack when the model allows it. If only one rack or a few items remain wet, check how those pieces face and whether one is nested inside another before changing the cycle.

6. Incoming water is below the maker’s stated range

Incoming water is below the maker's stated range

The water supply is below the temperature listed by the relevant manufacturer.

thermometer

Measure at the tap with a thermometer and compare only with the range for your brand: GE gives 120–140 °F, Samsung 120–149 °F, and Whirlpool about 120 °F. Do not average the figures or present one as universal.

Whirlpool recommends running the tap hot for 30–60 seconds before the dishwasher starts. GE advises avoiding another hot-water use during or just after the wash. If the home’s hot-water supply does not reach the model’s stated conditions, ask a plumber to check it.

7. A heating element or control needs service

8. The cycle stopped early

The cycle stopped before the drying phase

The dishwasher was opened or stopped before the cycle reached its normal end.

Samsung says a dishwasher opened or stopped partway through a cycle can leave dishes wet. Check whether the cycle finished and whether the display shows an interruption. If the model’s controls indicate a stopped cycle, follow its restart instructions.

Do not assume the dry phase failed if the cycle never reached it. Whirlpool recommends checking heat after a completed cycle with Heated Dry enabled. If the cycle stops repeatedly, record the display and call service.

How drying reaches the load

Detergent releases from the dispenser and the spray arms wash the racks. During drying, heat, rinse aid, loading and the surface material affect how water leaves the dishes. Samsung’s condensation description applies to the models on its page; GE and Whirlpool describe heated options. This diagram names the dispenser and arms without implying that the drying design is the same across brands.

If food remains after the cycle, use the separate dishwasher not-cleaning guide. If standing water is left in the tub, use the dishwasher not-draining hub rather than treating it as a drying problem.

When to call

Call service when a completed heated cycle repeatedly has no warmth, the breaker trips, or the control reports a fault. Before the call, note the brand, model, cycle, drying option, rinse-aid status and which materials remain wet. That is more useful than saying only that the dishwasher does not dry.
