For a Maytag dryer that is not heating, check the cycle and lint filter before requesting a part. Maytag’s electric-dryer guidance separates Air Only from a heated timed cycle and describes a two-circuit supply. Gas and 240-volt work belong to a professional.
Start with the selected cycle
Maytag says Air Only does not add heat. If that setting is selected, choose a heated cycle intended for the fabric. Its support page describes a five-minute timed-cycle heat check; do not use that check if the dryer smells burnt or the vent is unsafe.
Clean the lint filter after each load and look at the visible exhaust path. Maytag recommends vent cleaning every one to two years or as needed. A blocked vent can affect heat and drying. The dryer vent cleaning guide explains the accessible checks and when to hire a vent professional.
If the drum turns but a Maytag electric dryer does not heat, the power supply may be incomplete. Maytag says the electric model uses a 30-amp, 240-volt circuit with two breakers, one for the motor and one for the heater. Do not inspect the panel or terminal block. See the dryer not-heating hub for the shared troubleshooting order.

Maytag states that Air Only does not add heat. A cool drum on that setting is expected. Use a heat cycle suited to the clothing and follow the model’s care labels.
If a heated cycle still gives no warmth, do not assume the heater failed. Check the filter and vent, then consider the supply and professional diagnosis.
One of the electric circuits may have tripped
One of the household circuits may have tripped
The electric dryer runs but does not heat, or the external breaker appears changed.

- Moderate
- Time
- 5 minutes

Maytag says the electric dryer has two breakers: one for the motor and one for the heater. The drum may therefore run while the heating circuit is unavailable.
Do not open the breaker panel or touch wiring. If a breaker appears changed, the position is unclear or it trips again, stop and call a licensed electrician. Do not repeatedly reset it.

Maytag recommends cleaning the vent every one to two years or as needed. Clean the lint filter after each load and inspect only the visible hose and outside flap.
Do not move a gas-connected dryer or push a brush through a wall. Arrange professional cleaning for an inaccessible duct or a recurring restriction.

Maytag’s own order: heat test, cycle, then supply
Maytag’s electric and gas pages begin the same way. Select a heated timed cycle, run it for five minutes with the dryer empty, then open the door and feel inside. If it is warm, Maytag says the problem is drying performance, not heat, and sends you to its drying-performance guidance (covered below). If it is cold, check the cycle: Air Only and Air/Fluff add no heat at any point, and Maytag notes that air-only cycles work better as Timed Dry cycles.
For an electric dryer, Maytag says the machine uses a separate 30-amp circuit fused on both sides of the line, so there are two breakers, one running the motor and one running the heating element. If either is tripped, the dryer may not heat, which is why a drum can turn while the heater is dead. Maytag also says the dryer needs a 240-volt supply and that a qualified electrician should check that if the home does not provide it. It points to its 3-wire and 4-wire cord-installation videos and says terminal screws at the dryer should be tight, with a warning to unplug the dryer before checking them. This guide stops short of that last step: tightening terminal screws is electrical work, and a cord that was installed wrong is something an electrician should confirm.
For a gas dryer, Maytag’s page warns that the drum will turn but the dryer will not heat if the gas shutoff valve is closed, and says the valve is open when its handle is parallel to the gas pipe. It also lists a connected gas supply and an intact household fuse or breaker. This site does not walk anyone through gas-line work. If you cannot tell whether the valve is open, or you smell gas at any point, leave the house without touching switches and call the gas utility from outside. Maytag’s gas page does not describe the igniter or give any gas safety warnings of its own.
If the dryer heats but clothes stay damp
Maytag’s drying-performance page covers the more common case of a dryer that is warm but slow. Its quick checks: confirm the plug, the breakers and, on gas models, the supply valve; close and latch the door and turn off Child Lock; and use sensor cycles for most loads, timed or higher-heat cycles for heavy items, and skip air-only or low-heat settings if you want faster drying. Load size matters: aim for the drum to be about half to three-quarters full, dry similar fabrics together, keep towels and heavy items apart from light garments, and dry bulky items like comforters alone, pausing to shake them out. Empty the lint filter before every load, and if softener residue builds up, wash the filter with warm water and a soft brush and dry it completely.
On the vent, Maytag says to unplug first, then check the hose behind the dryer for kinks, crushing or excessive length and remove lint from the hose and wall connection; with the dryer running, confirm the outdoor hood flap opens freely and clear any lint, debris or nests. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, not plastic or foil accordion-style duct. Many dryers perform best with a total equivalent length under 35 feet, according to the page, and each 90-degree elbow adds resistance, so check your model’s installation instructions for exact limits. Warning signs of poor airflow include loads that are warm but damp after a full cycle, heat or humidity in the laundry area, and lint around the door seal or lint housing. Maytag sells a dryer vent testing kit, part number W11224254, for assessing airflow.
Two Maytag-specific cycle notes explain slow dryers that are not broken. Quick Dry and Rapid Dry are timed cycles meant for smaller loads. EcoBoost, which Maytag says is on by default only for the Regular cycle, uses slightly lower heat and adds about 40 minutes; turn it off for the fastest drying. And if a new dryer is connected to older house venting, long dry times can persist. Maytag says to clean outdoor venting every one to two years, or sooner when drying performance drops, depending on how often you dry, what you dry and pet hair.
What to have ready when you call Maytag
Maytag’s page says to call for service if long dry times continue after cleaning, the dryer does not heat, error codes appear, or unusual noises occur. It asks you to have the model and serial numbers, a description of the symptoms, the steps you have already tried, and the vent type and approximate length ready. Customer service is 1-800-344-1274, and the electric-dryer page lists live chat from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Maytag’s pages do not mention a thermal fuse or give a threshold for service beyond those cases, so anything inside the cabinet is for the technician to diagnose.
What each Maytag page leaves out
Maytag splits its help across three pages, and each one skips something the others cover. The electric-dryer page covers the heat test, the two breakers, the 240-volt supply, the cord and the terminal screws, but says nothing about the lint filter or the vent. The gas-dryer page covers the gas connection, the shutoff valve and the household breaker, with no vent guidance and no gas safety warning. The drying-performance page is the only one that covers the vent, the filter and the load, and it does not describe the heater. That is why a dryer that heats poorly needs the vent checked even when the breaker and supply are fine, and why a dryer with no heat at all should not be judged from the vent page alone.
Stop and call a pro
Call a licensed electrician or appliance technician for a 240-volt supply, cord, terminal, gas or internal heater issue. Do not inspect gas valves or wiring. If you smell gas, leave the home without touching switches and call the utility from outside.
