For a GE dishwasher not draining, check the removable filters and visible drain route before suspecting the pump. GE’s own code list helps order the work: C1 means the drain took more than two minutes, while C3 means it did not drain. The exact meaning of lights and codes can vary by model.
Two-minute GE checks
Read the display and note the model before taking anything apart. If there is standing water, look at the filter screens and the rear of the tub for paper or a large object. Remove filters only as your model manual directs. Do not assume that a diagram for a different GE generation matches your tub.
Look below the sink for a visible kink in the dishwasher hose. Check whether the sink drains normally and whether the garbage disposal was recently installed. If the installation has an air gap, GE says to remove its cap and clear debris as directed. If there is no air gap, the high loop must follow the height in the model manual.
Use only dishwasher detergent. GE says the wrong type or amount can create excess suds that interfere with draining. Do not add more detergent to fix standing water. If the sink itself is slow, call a plumber about the household drain rather than using the dishwasher to push water through it.
GE drain codes and beeps
GE lists C1 when draining takes more than two minutes. Its suggested path includes the air gap, hose and disposal. C3 means the dishwasher did not drain; GE says to cut power at the breaker for about 30 seconds and restart. If the code remains, arrange service rather than repeating resets.
C4 means the dishwasher filled twice after a power interruption. GE points to a stuck float or a blocked drain or sump; the owner can touch the float cover and check the rear sump as the model instructions allow. C5 means pump time was too short; GE says to confirm water is entering and check the float cover. FTD or F56 indicates a drain fault and points back to the hose, air gap and disposal checks.
Beeping every 30 seconds or every minute can mean the door opened during a cycle; close it and observe whether the cycle resumes. Other lights or beeps may follow a power surge. GE says to press Start/Reset and wait two minutes; if the signal continues, interrupt power for 30 seconds. The meaning varies by model, so use the exact model manual when the display does not match the page.
C4 and C5 need the same care with the model manual. GE says C4 can follow a power interruption and points to a stuck float or a blocked drain or sump. C5 means pump time was too short; GE’s page says to confirm that water is entering and check the float cover. Those descriptions do not authorize taking the float assembly apart. If the cover cannot be checked as the manual shows, leave it for service.
GE’s portable dishwasher guidance is different from its built-in drain checks: a portable model attached to a sink through a unicouple should be serviced when it will not drain. Do not apply the built-in hose instructions to that connection or disconnect it while water is in the tub. If the dishwasher was newly installed, include that timing when you call; it can help distinguish a setup issue from a fault that started during normal use.
When GE says the code meaning varies by model, treat the manual as the tie-breaker. The same blinking light pattern should not be copied from a different generation. Record whether the machine beeped once or repeatedly, which lights flashed, and whether the cycle had reached its drain stage. A short note is more useful than clearing the display before you identify what it showed.
Causes, from simple checks to service
1. The Fine or Ultra Fine filter needs cleaning
The Fine or Ultra Fine filter needs cleaning
Water remains and the removable GE filter screens are visibly covered with debris.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 15 minutes
- Tools
- soft brush
GE says to remove and inspect the Fine and Ultra Fine filters. Food residue on a removable screen can slow the water path. Switch the appliance off first and follow the instructions for your model; not every filter assembly is identical.
Rinse the filters and reinstall them in the correct position. Use the cleaning interval in your model manual. If the filter is damaged or will not seat, stop and contact GE support.
2. Paper or a large object is in the sump
Paper or a large object is in the sump
Debris is visible at the rear of the tub after the filter is removed as directed by the manual.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time
- 15 minutes
- Tools
- gloves
GE identifies the sump at the back of the tub as a place where paper or large objects can collect. Check it only after removing the filters as your manual describes. Do not reach blindly into the sump; sharp debris can be present.
Remove only an object you can clearly see and safely reach. If the item is lodged near the pump or the area cannot be accessed without disassembly, call a technician. Do not use a knife or force the pump cover.
3. The drain hose is kinked, clogged or old
The drain hose is kinked or clogged
The visible hose is bent, obstructed or old, or a GE drain code returns after a cycle.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time
- 20 minutes

- Part cost
- $50–$100Source: Dishwasher Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026
Inspect the exposed hose for a bend or obstruction. GE notes that a newer white corrugated hose may replace an older hose in some installations. Do not pull the dishwasher out to reach a hidden connection unless you can protect its water and electrical connections.
The $50–$100Source: Dishwasher Repair Cost (Fixr) · Checked October 12, 2026 is a Fixr planning range, not a GE quote. Ask the installer to check the full route and confirm the model’s required high loop before replacing the hose.
4. The disposal knockout plug was not removed
The disposal knockout plug was not removed
The disposal was recently installed or replaced and the dishwasher connection may still be plugged.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- Time
- 30 minutes
- Tools
- None listed
If a disposal was recently installed or replaced, its dishwasher inlet may still have the knockout plug. GE includes that connection in its drain checks. Do not reach into the disposal or disconnect its wiring.
Ask the installer to confirm the plug was removed. If the disposal is old and the sink drains slowly, a household plumbing restriction may be more likely than a new dishwasher fault.
5. The air gap is blocked
The air gap is blocked
The installation has an air gap and debris is visible after its cap is removed as the manual allows.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 10 minutes
- Tools
- small brush
If the installation has an air gap, GE says to remove its cap and clean the debris. Do this only as the model instructions permit. If the cap does not come off easily or the connection leaks, stop and ask for service.
If there is no air gap, GE says the drain hose needs a high loop at the height stated in the manual. An air gap and a high loop are different arrangements; use the one described for the model and installation.
6. Excess suds are slowing drainage
Excess suds are slowing drainage
Foam remains in the tub after detergent not intended for a dishwasher or too much product was used.
- Difficulty
- Easy
- Time
- 5 minutes
- Tools
- None listed
GE says an incorrect detergent type or amount can create suds that interfere with drainage. Use detergent made for a dishwasher and follow the package and model directions. Do not pour hand-dishwashing liquid into the dispenser.
If foam remains, let the cycle stop and use the instructions for the model. GE specifically warns not to use drain cleaner in the dishwasher. Do not combine cleaning products or use a chemical as a substitute for checking the filter and drain path.
7. The model needs service
The GE model needs service
A code persists after the listed checks or the portable unicouple model needs internal attention.
- Difficulty
- Pro
- Time
- 45 minutes
- Tools
- None listed
If a GE code remains after the listed checks, the next step is service. GE says portable dishwashers connected through a unicouple need service for a drain issue. Do not disassemble that connection to test the pump.
Record the model, code, whether the sink is slow and which checks you completed. For the full GE code table, see the GE dishwasher error-code guide. If a breaker trips again or water is leaking, keep the dishwasher off and call for qualified help.
Follow the drain route
Water leaves the tub through the filter and sump, then travels through the hose to the sink drain or disposal. An air gap, where installed, sits above the counter connection. A blockage at any one of those points can look like a pump problem, so the code and the location of water matter.
- Detergent dispenser
- Lower spray arm
- Middle spray arm
- Filter
- Sump
- Drain pump
- Drain hose
- High loop
- Air gap (if installed)
- Disposal inlet or drain connection
The maps are generic, not GE service drawings. Use them to identify the named area, then follow the model manual for access. The dishwasher not-draining hub compares shared causes across brands; this page keeps the GE codes and checks separate.
Repair cost and when to call
Before paying for a diagnosis, record the display, check the removable filter and inspect the visible hose, air gap and disposal connection. Do not order a pump from a code alone. If the technician recommends a pump or hose, ask what they found and compare the written estimate with the dishwasher pump-cost guide.
Call a plumber if the sink or household drain backs up. Call a qualified appliance technician if the dishwasher still shows a drain code, the portable unicouple is involved, or the next step requires opening the appliance. Keep the model number ready; GE warns that code and light behavior can vary by model.
If the display shows a C-code, FTD or H2O, the GE dishwasher error-code guide explains what GE lists for each.
